「紛争地」と「ジョーク」というギャップのある言葉の結びつきがまず目をひいた。紛争や圧政の中でこそ、ジョークが発達するという観点は新鮮だった。イラクやパレスチナなどの中東や旧ユーゴスラビア、ロマ（ジプシー）、クルド人のジョークなど、初見のものも多く、興味深い。ジョーク集というと今までにいろいろ出ているが、考えてみればアメリカや西欧のものばかりで、世界中にはそれぞれジョークがあったんだな、と当たり前のことなのに、意外な驚き。国や民族によって微妙に笑いのつぼが違うのが、比較できるのもよかった。

いくらいいジョークでも翻訳のうまい下手で笑えるかどうか大きな差が付く。よく大学の教授が書いたようなジョーク本が笑えないのは、笑いのツボが違うのではないかと思う．この版元が前に出している｢世界ビジネスジョーク集｣はそのきらいがあってあまり笑えなかった．

この｢紛争地ジョーク集｣は違う．この著者はルポライターということだが、笑いにうるさい人でもあるのだろう。オチまでのテンポや言葉選びがうまくて素直に笑わせてくれる．この本の主題である｢笑いと紛争の関係｣も興味深かったが、やっぱりジョークは笑えてなんぼ。そういう意味でこの本はバランスが良かったと思う．

中近東、旧ソ連・東欧、アジアの各国のジョークを集めたもの。必ずしも紛争地とは限らないし、紛争ネタや政治ネタはそれほど多くないので、タイトルから期待していたのとはちょっと違う。まあ、あまりなじみのない国々のジョーク集と思えば、それなりに楽しめる。

気に入ったのを１つ、かいつまんで紹介する。レバノンのジョーク。なお”アブ・アベド”とは、アラブ系ジョークの定番キャラクターだそうだ。

朝の５時、ホテルのフロントに、宿泊客のアブ・アベドから電話がかかってくる。
「ホテルのバーは何時に開店するの？」「午後２時です」「じゃ、待ってるよ」

だがその後、アブ・アベドから何度も何度も、バーはいつになったら開店するのかと、催促の電話がかかってくる。フロントが音を上げて
「もう勘弁して下さい。ご希望のお飲み物を、お部屋にお持ちしますから」
「いやいや、そうじゃないんだ。昨晩酔いつぶれて、バーに閉じ込められてしまったんで、開店するのを待ってるんだよ」
