　３・４年前からホームレスの人をあつかった短いドキュメンタリーが夕方のニュースなどで見られるようになってきた。強く興味を感じた。なぜその人はホームレスになったのか、ホームレスというのはどういう生活なのか。
　このことに関する書籍を探したがなかった。つい最近この本を本屋で見かけ、さっそく買った。

　年齢も背景も異なった８名の方が紹介されている。会社経営者、エリートサラリーマン、女子プロレスラーなどホームレスになるとは思えない経歴の方が多い。

　著者は近年の日本で自殺が増えていることにも言及する。ホームレスが増える理由、また自殺が増える理由を、現代の日本が「縁」を消失する社会になってきているからだと考察する。家族との縁、会社との縁、地域との縁、国との縁。近年の日本では会社との縁が切れると外部との縁がなくなってしまう人が多く、これが原因だという。

　自分自身の生活を振り返るきっかけとなる１冊だった。

上野の公園は月に２、３度は通り抜けるが、いわゆるホームレスの人たちを良く見かける。ベンチにきちっと座って新聞などを読む姿や、テントの前にやはりきちんとそろえておいてある靴とスリッパ等を観るにつけ、考えさせられるものがある・・・と常々思っていたが、この度この本を読んで色々と知った。上野界隈の状況や、黄さんという牧師さんなど。著者の身の丈の語り口のためか、従来のホームレス物にはない価値判断、評価のないリアルな物語になっている。事実は小説より奇なり。人生が物語りであることを再認識した。また選択的ホームレスは冒険なき時代のニュー・アドヴェンチャーかなと想ったりもした。とにかく一気に読ませられて、後忘れられない。

長引く不況や企業の倒産といった経済的な理由だけでホームレスの増加を捉えていたが、自分の住むこの社会特有の構造が真の原因であるとの考察にやられた。もし、毎日がつまらなかったり、さみしかったりするなら、一度この本を読んで自分を取り巻く環境を冷静に認識してみるのもいい。俺は現在経済的にはホームレスではないが、社会的にはホームレス予備軍である自分に気づいたよ。怖くておもしろい、すぐ読めるお買い得な本。
