信長の天下（京都）所司代として京都支配を担った吏僚・村井貞勝の
実際の施政行動を緻密に追った研究書。
朝廷や公家、寺社に対する丁寧な配慮が浮かび上がり、
朝廷側も貞勝を頼りにして何かと依頼や相談事をしている。
それまで荘園も略奪され、経済的に困窮していた彼らにしてみたら
非常に頼りになる存在であったに違いない。
所領安堵や土木事業、裁判、治安維持まで含めあらゆる機能が集中しており、
相当忙しかったであろうと推察される。
その様子が公家や神官の日記に基づき具体的に描写されている。

彼は本能寺の変で、二条御所に立てこもった信忠と運命を共にし殉じている。
歴史にifは禁物だが、彼らが京都支配で培った情報・人脈を駆使して
信忠を何とか逃すことに成功していれば歴史は大きく変わったに違いない。
また彼と同じような信長の吏僚は、知行を独自に持たなかったあまり、
信長政権の崩壊と共に歴史の表舞台から消えていったという事実も興味深い。
彼が逃げのびたとしてもまた同様の運命をたどっていたのだろうか…。

羽柴秀吉や前田利家、明智光秀などいわゆる武功派の家臣は、
これまでも取り上げられてきましたが、村井貞勝は吏僚のため
戦場での派手な活躍はありません。
朝廷や公家の力が現代よりもずっと強かった時代に
織田家の本拠地・岐阜から遠く離れた首都京都において
次々と旧弊を打破し『革命児』と称された信長の意を汲んで
吏僚としてその責務を立派に果たした村井貞勝。
電話もメールのない時代に、その功績は際立っています。
能吏とはまさしく彼のことを言うのかもしれません。
現代のビジネスマンにとっても役立つことが書かれています。

いつも、谷口先生の書籍は必ず購入して読ませていただいているが、今回の内容も一級史料を用いて、事細かく村井貞勝の一生についてまとめ上げている。非常に読みやすく一気に読んでしまった。戦場ではなく実務面で貞勝が活躍していたことがよく理解できた。朝廷とのパイプ役で奔走しており、本能寺の変には信忠を支え、最後まで織田家のために尽くした人物である。今回の場合でもそうだが、貞勝の邸宅は本能寺のすぐ近くであり、明智の軍が襲撃していた時に邸宅を出て、信忠と合流ができ、信忠も妙覚寺という近くにいて二条御所まで移動して立てこもっている。それだけの移動できる時間と明智の軍とも衝突していない。やはり光秀の本能寺襲撃計画がどこまで考えられたものか疑問である。私的にはこの時間に信忠には逃げてほしかった。
