　マチュピチュ遺跡についてはわからないことだらけで、詳しい解説が出ている本はあまりなかったと思います。この本は、長年アンデスに滞在し、何度もマチュピチュを訪れた写真家が書いたものですが、考古学者などが書いた本とは違って、自由な発想でマチュピチュの謎に迫るという面白さがありました。特に、これからマチュピチュに行こうとしている人にはガイドとして非常に役立つと思います。私もマチュピチュに行きましたが、適切なガイド本がなかったので、この本に書かれている場所で、見ていないところがかなり多いのです。この本を読んで、もう一度マチュピチュに行かなければと思いました。

平積みの中からいきなり目に飛び込んできた。前に購入した「アマゾンの森と川を行く」と同じ著者ではないか。興味津々インカ誕生の伝説、インカ道、黄金伝説、今までに知らなかった歴史等など、読み進んでいくうちに憧れのマチュピチュやアンデスを歩いているような気持ちにさせてもらった。しっかりした調査に裏打ちされた信頼感によるものだろう。こんなに夢を膨らませてインカを歩ける著者が羨ましい。ハイクオリティで貴重な数々の写真も心を慰めてくれる。谷に架かる虹は圧巻。

マチュピチュに出かけたことのある私は、本書を開きながら著者がうらやましく思えました。あまりにも多くの角度から、マチュピチュを目にしている人だと感じられたからです。遺跡の細部、あるいは回りの氷雪峰や森なども。それらの写真を見ながら、肌にまとわりつくように感じたマチュピチュの空気を思い出させてもらうことができました。まるであの空間の中に舞い戻ってしまったかのように。

また、写真だけでなく、それぞれの地名が説明してある文章も丁寧ですばらしいと思いました。現地のケチュア語の地名に日本語の意味も添えられているので、いっそうイメージが膨らみます。マチュピチュがインカにとってどのような存在であったのか、インカの世界観や死生観、自然観などとダイナミックに連関されて語られており、マチュピチュやインカの魅力にますます惹きつけられます。

さらに、18〜19世紀時代のマチュピチュ地方の土地の売買、古い地図、ドイツ人が関わった財宝の会社の歴史などは、謎めいていて大変興味深く、もっと詳しく知りたい気持ちをかきたてられます。実際にマチュピチュを訪れてもつかむことのできない内容が満載されている本だと思いました。
