映画はどういった環境で観られるのか。
なかなか無い観点からのもので
学術書といいながらも
文章も読みやすく
とても面白かったです！

おおまかには世界、日本の
映画環境の通史といったところで
その点に興味の無い方だと
読み進むのは厳しいかもしれません。

観客と映画を結ぶ「映画館」という媒体を通して見た映画史の試み。これは面白い本だった。普通の映画史の本に載っていないような話を、ずいぶんたくさん知ることができた。初期の映画館（ニッケルオデオン）ではスライド映写される歌詞に合わせて観客全員が大合唱をしていたなんて、普通の映画史の本には決して載っていない。「観客が歌う」という行為は映画と直接関係ないので、映画史からは排除されてしまうのだ。ファントム・ライドというバーチャル列車の興行もしかり。こんなものは普通の映画史の本では、まず絶対にお目にかかれない。著者は映画批評家なので、目の前の現象と切り結ぼうとする言葉の閃きが時折見られることがあるのだが、新書というサイズの問題もあって、この本のではそれは最小限に留められている。むしろそれが、この本のスピード感につながっているようにも思う。著者個人の解釈や考察より、まずは映画館における映画受容の変遷という事実そのものが、僕には興味深く面白いものだったからだ。 他の映画史の教科書ではあまり知ることができなかった事柄の他にも、今まで映画史の中の言葉として漠然と知っていても実態がよくわからなかった事柄について、細かく記しているのはありがたい。例えばそれは、本書冒頭にあるパノラマ館についての記述だったり、ドライブインシアターについての細かな記事だったり、日本映画初期の連鎖劇についての記事だったりする。最近読んだ映画関連本の中では、まず間違いなく一番面白かった本だ。この著者の本を読むのはこれが初めてだったんだけど、他にも読んでみようかな〜。

１１０年の映画史の中で映画館（映画上映装置）にこんな色んな種類があって、それらがそれぞれほんとに色々なプレゼンテーション方法を採用していて、それとともにどんな風に観客の欲望を分節していたのか、その歴史を大づかみに、ときには繊細な分析とともに解説していて目から鱗が落ちた。映画論が、従来の作家論や作品論や俳優論ではない、まったく新しい観点から形成されていて、これも目から鱗。これは新しい発見に充ち満ちた日米映画館＝観客比較文化論だ。
