本書は大英博物館の歴史にフォーカスを当てるという面白い視点で書かれている。大英博物館のコレクションがどのような経緯で増えていったか、その収集の過程にもドラマがあって面白い。また図書ルームで暴れた日本人の逸話や、コレクションが来訪者に壊されてしまうといった小話も面白い。あれだけのすごいコレクションを誇っているのに開館以来ずっと入場料無料というスタンスには感銘した。ロンドンに長く滞在できる人はぜひ本書を読んで、最低でも2日間は大英博物館に通うと、相当の人類史通？になれるかもしれないですよ。おすすめです。

著者のイギリスへの思い入れがたっぷりと伝わってくる一冊。私的なエピソードも多く興味深い。とはいえ、読者にとってそれが面白いかは別問題。失礼な言い方かも知れないが、書きたいことをただひたすら書いている感じで、全体の流れを意識しているように感じられなかった。そのため、何度か途中で読むのをやめてしまった。
「物語」と名のつく中公新書は大体読んだが、他はかなり全体の流れを意識している印象があったから、よけいそう思ってしまったのかも知れない。もっとも、「大英博物館に関するエピソード集」だと思って読めば、それはそれで面白い。

校正がどうも甘いのもマイナス。ただ、文章そのものは読みやすい。イギリス文化、歴史に精通している人ならなお楽しめる。

　新書は、本によって途中で退屈するものもありますが、この本は単なる歴史の羅列にとどまらず、読みやすくかつ内容も充実している素晴らしい本だと思います。題名の「物語」が示しているように、大英博物館を中心にそれをめぐる人々を描くことによって歴史を辿るという手法が用いられていて、日本人は南方熊楠や夏目漱石も登場しています。
