　この本では江戸時代の「走り」についてデータや文書を細かく評価し、その実状・要因を捉えると共に、大名・武士の経済状況についても分析を行っている。テレビの時代劇では農民層が武士に圧制を強いられている様な表現が多々観られるが、それらが大きな見当違いで、且つそれ以上に農民が自由な領地移動を繰り返していた事を指摘している。時代劇等で定式化した時代認識を反転し、実際の姿がどんなであったかを理解する良い材料と言えるでしょう。（だけど、ちょっとデータが多めな感じがします）

私が大学に入ったばかりの頃、この本を書店で何気なく手にし、購入した。それはタイトルに惹かれたからだったのだが、思わぬ良作であった。
一般像と史実との差異をわかりやすく描いてある。新書にしては若干細かいが論証・記述ともに丁寧で、歴史に興味のある人には示唆多き作品となるだろう。

江戸初期の農民は、領主の年貢がきついとさっさと国を捨てて、隣国に移住したそうだ。受け入れ側も心得たもので、他国から来た農民には３年間年貢を免除するなど優遇措置を設けて、自国に農民が集まるような政策も行った。要は大名が農民を取り合っていた、というのである。

なんとなく、江戸時代の農村は抑圧されていた、というイメージがあるが、わりあいに自由で大事にされていたという点が意外で面白かった。

本書は、専門書を一般向けに新書に仕立て直した、ということで、詳細な資料分析が内容の大半を占める。どちらかというと日本史マニア向けで、書名から期待するほどの起伏はない。真面目な研究者の書いた良質な書物だとは思うが、読み物としては残念ながらやや退屈であった。
