笠原 英彦
1956年(昭和31年)、東京都に生まれる。1980年、慶応義塾大学法学部政治学科卒業。1985年、同大学院法学研究科博士課程修了。法学博士。1988~89年、2000~01年、スタンフォード大学(米国)訪問研究員。現在、慶応義塾大学法学部教授。専攻、日本政治史、日本行政史(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

天皇とはどんな存在か。
著者があとがきに記すようにこの問いに答えるのは難しい。
でもここにまとめられた「天皇」の存在意義とはおそろしくシンプルなものだ。
それはただひたすらどんな係累を築き、子孫を残すか、ということに集約されている。どんな家系も絶える可能性を常にはらんでいるのだろうが、この家族だけはそれを許されない。ある意味、とても怖いことだ。

この本の中でも「政治」に深く関わったことが記されている天皇は奈良時代以降については明治、昭和の近代の二人の他は、既存の政体に挑んだ後醍醐天皇や後鳥羽上皇くらいのものであり、むしろ『異端』的な存在だったことがわかる。

それでは天皇は神道の神官という地位を保持してきたのかというとそうでもなく、災いが起こると般若心経を綴ったり、寺に詣でたりもしている（あ、もちろん創ったりもしている）。

天皇の存在価値とは、実際の政体が一種の逃げの口実に使うためのクッションとしての存在だったようにも思える。

古事記・日本書紀の神話の時代から連綿と続き、世界で一番古くまで家系をさかのぼることのできる日本の天皇家。この皇室が、なぜこれほどまでに長い間続いてきたのか、当時の政治体系や権力者との関わり方、血統を残すための政略までを大局にたって総合的に検証する、などといった、小難しい本ではありません。

実在が疑問視されている神話時代の初代・神武天皇から、第１２４代・昭和天皇までの生涯や事跡がコンパクトにまとめられています。さすがに１２４人ともなると、紙幅の都合もあったのか、あまりにコンパクトすぎるような気もしますが、天皇家に興味のある人はもちろん、歴史に興味のある人から歴史小説好きな人まで、手元においておくときっと重宝しますよ。

以前、作家の井上ひさし氏が自宅に右翼団体の構成員に押し入られた時、「それじゃあ、神武天皇から今の天皇まで全部名前を言ってみろ！」と一喝して一同沈黙させたという伝説みたいな話がありますが、我々も日本人として自己防衛の為、全ての天皇の名前を暗記しておく必要があります、というのは冗談ですが(笑)、１００代以上続いていると聞いたことのない天皇の名前の方が多いですね。この本の天皇それぞれの解説はステレオタイプですが、日本史を勉強する際には、やはり重宝する一冊のようです。
