今バルセロナに住んでおり、日々のニュースではほぼ毎日のようにカタルーニャの独立に関連すると思われる法案の改正が流れています。ともするとデモ行進では国旗に火をつけている場面も報道されます。「同じ一つの国なのに、なぜ？」という疑問は、日本人の感覚からするととても理解できるものではありませんでした。数冊の本を日本より取り寄せて読みましたが、この本はとても分かりやすくて楽しく読めたと同時に、この地域の人々の意識の奥底にあるものも少しですが理解できたような気がします。

12世紀から14世紀にかけてのヨーロッパ中世の時代、西部地中海世界を席巻した強大な海洋帝国が存在した。その知られざる地中海帝国の名は、カタルーニャ・アラゴン連合王国。中世、スペイン全土はイスラム勢力の支配下にあった。しかし10世紀以降になると、キリスト教徒が勢力を挽回し、レコンキスタ（国土回復運動）を展開。スペイン東北部のカタルーニャ・アラゴン連合王国もまた、イスラム教徒に対する再征服活動を活発化させていく。さらに王国は西部地中海に進出、シチリアやアテネにまで版図を広げていく。こうしてカタルーニャ・アラゴン連合王国は、地中海世界にその栄光の名を轟かせることになった。本書が描くのは、このカタルーニャ・アラゴン地中海帝国が隆盛を極めた、中世カタルーニャの歴史である。

「征服王」ジャウマ1世。荒くれ者揃いの傭兵部隊アルモガバルスの首領ルジェ・ダ・フロー、すなわち「華のフロー」。偉大な神秘思想家であると同時に、「カタルーニャ語の父」でもあるラモン・リュイ。中世カタルーニャの栄光を彩った彼らさまざまな主役たちを、著者は、歴史小説のような筆致で生き生きと描く。「いざ、マリョルカへ！」「剣よ目覚めよ」「さあ、野郎ども、戦だ！」。本書の魅力の一つは、こうした架空の会話の数々だ。実証的な歴史研究を最低限踏まえながらも、文献史料の「実証性」に束縛されすぎることなく、自由に想像力を働かせる。「学」としての歴史と、「物語」としての歴史。この両者が非常にバランスのとれた形で、本書に詰まっているのだ。だからこそ、読み応えがあって、何度も読み返したくなる。著者が歴史研究者ではなく、カタルーニャ語・文化研究者であるからこそ可能だったのだと思う。日本であまり知られていないカタルーニャ史の入門書として、非常に良質であると思う。

新書版で読める、おそらく本邦はじめての「カタルーニャの歴史書」。

従来あまり焦点をあてられなかった地域の歴史ですので、一気呵成に読み通すことが出来ました。できれば巻末に索引および固有名詞の原綴を付記しておいて頂ければ、なお良かったかと存知ます。

カスティーリャともバスクともナバラともガリシアとも異なるイベリア半島の一地方史、といっても文化史上かなり重要な地域の歴史、を手軽な新書でひもとけるとは、我が国の出版界も成熟してきたではありませぬか。

次回は、アンダルシーアの主にイスラーム時代の繁栄期を中心とした「物語アル・アンダルスの歴史」を読んでみたいものです。さらには、「物語シチリアの歴史」や「物語マグレブの歴史」「物語ビザンティンの歴史」等々も是非と!も上梓して欲しく願います。
