戦後、社会主義体制を志す諸派を統合し成立した日本社会党。
しかし、その歴史は米ソ冷戦から、中ソ対立、冷戦構造の崩壊など移りゆく
世界情勢に常に翻弄されながら、同党内部での右派・左派の鋭い対立と分裂、
そして統合の繰り返しであった。５５年体勢下での「野党慣れ」、自社さ政

権の誕生と国内の政治が変動する中で階級政党と大衆政党の狭間に苦しみな
がら何時しかその「理想主義」はかつての野党第１党としての支持を失って
いった。この著作は、そうした戦後から現代に至る日本社会党の果たした役
割と問題点、政策の変遷を著者の厳しい批判と視点を交えながらまとめた一

冊である。新書の中では少々厚みのある本だが、勧められる一冊である。

　1939年に生まれ、ケンブリッジ等の客員研究員となった、日米安保体制を研究する国際政治学者が、2000年に刊行した本。著者の政治的立場は、170〜175頁と終章を参照のこと。敗戦直後に西尾ら右派主導で、社民系（反共右派）、日労系（マルクス主義中間派）、日無系（労農派＝マルクス主義左派）が合流して、日本社会党は結成された。ただし、彼らは軍国主義者と相互往復する素地があり、またGHQの民主化政策の後塵を拝していた。1947年一応第一党となった社会党は、右派主導で連立政権をつくり、日米結合体制を模索するが、党内左派の造反や小分裂により下野する。1950年前後、平和主義を採択した社会党は、総評と結合し、永久政権論・反米・前衛主義を掲げた左派の優位を徐々に明確化してゆき、1960年の右派離党＝民社党結成や、市民社会主義＝江田構造改革論の挫折をひき起こす。このように社会党は、党内の分裂を収拾しえず、裏面での熾烈な権力闘争と、表面での曖昧な態度を繰り返す。外交面でも、各国の冷厳な権力政治や党内闘争に翻弄され、日本の野党第一党としての存在感を示すことができなかった（ただし、自民党の対米交渉の際には、社会党の存在が役に立った）。80年代半ばに西欧型社民主義に移行したものの、結局社会変動から取り残された社会党は、1993年の自民党分裂まで、連立という形であれ政権交代を実現することはできず、万年野党に安住した。90年代半ばの、政策大転換＝なし崩しの現状肯定と社会民主党への改称は、同党の衰退を決定的にした。主観主義的で現実から遊離した「理想主義」、しかも議会主義を軽視したそれ（要は対話軽視？）こそが、結果的に自民党一党支配を利し、政治不信を重層化させた、というのが著者の結論である。社会経済的分析の少なさ、院内闘争の偏重傾向はあるが、私は著者の姿勢に基本的には首肯できる。

面白いし､参考にもなる。
しかし、学者の書いた本としてはあまりに論証がずさんで､恣意性が露骨である｡
まず筆者の仮設があり､その仮設に向けて一直線に､都合の良い情報だけを選んで掲載している感が強い｡
類書がほぼ無いだけに、この点についての恨みは大きい。

値段から見たら充分な内容ではあるが。
