これは、日本語という言語の、タイトルにもあるように「発想」や
「立場」の特殊性について考察した本である。

例えば、英語で「あなた」に相当する言葉はご存じ「You」になるが、
日本語の「あなた」は必ずしも英語の「You」に相当しない。というのは、
「あなた（彼方）」はもともと遠方指示代名詞（辞書参考のこと）であり、
「私から見てあちら側」だから人間に対しても「あなた」と言うのである、
というのが著者の分析である（「彼」も同じ）。
強引に式にすると「あなた≒You」ということになるかな。

「日本語は場面を前提としたうえでの発話が多く、それだけ場面への
依存度は高いと見てよい。それが結果として主語省略や文末の曖昧性
を生むのである」（本文より）

その他にも「自動詞の受け身」とか「~さん」とか「男言葉・女言葉」とか
日本語ならではの表現を、その日本ならではの考え方ゆえにそうなって
いるという分析は、少し強引にも見えることもありますが、読んでいて
ハッと気づかされる所も多いと思います。逆に、日本の特徴的な文化
（相手への異常なまでの敬意等）は、こういった考え方から生まれて
いるのかも、と思えてくるかもしれません（大げさかな）。

翻訳で苦しむ人、日本が卑屈な国であると思ってる人、外国で成功した
例が日本で上手くいかないと嘆いている人など、色んな人の要求に応える
ことが出来る本であるように思います。

外国人に（日本人もだけど）「言われないとやらないから日本はダメなんだ」とか
言われたときに、これを英語で説明『できる』なら相手も多少納得するかも知れません。
すべて英語（型言語）が正しいというのは、日本人からしたら異常ですから。
それに対する一つの見方を呈してくれたということも含めて星四つ。

日本語教育、日本語研究に長年の歳月を費やしてこられた
筆者が手がけた、内容が非常に濃く、ボリューム感のある本。

日本語話者は、「私」の視点から主観的にものごとを、「全体的に」
捉えている点で、「部分から」「客観的に」言語化していく西欧諸国
言語とは本質的にその性質を異にするものである、という主張が一貫
して本の中でなされている。

また、その背景には、その言語を使用する地理的要因、歴史的要因、
文化的要因が関係して言語をかたちづくっているという、弱い形の
「サピア＝ウォーフ仮説」を支持する意見が述べられている。

今まで筆者が個々にしか説明がつかなかったことが、地下茎のように
共通部分（コア）があることに気づき、それにより一貫した説明が
可能になったと主張されていることからも、筆者の数多くの出版の
中でも集大成的な珠玉の一冊と言えるのかもしれない。

そのためか、新書の中では、読破するのにも時間もかかるし、
内容の重さ、厚みを感じる本だった。

　著者は西洋かぶれの人物のようだ。日本人として恥ずかしくなる。主語と述語の対応を意識していては分かりやすい日本語は書けないと思う。この人の文章は冗長でかえって分かりにくい。書店で買えばこのような失敗はしないのに。たまにはこんなこともありますね。
