人はしばしば「後悔」の念を抱く生き物であるが、本書に遭遇してその思いを実感することとなった。今年の6月に私は他大学の大学院生とケンブリッジ大学とロンドン大学を「垣間見る」機会を得た。キングズ・カレッジやそのチャペルの歴史的重みや荘厳さを肌で感じることができたのは貴重だった。わずか一週間足らずに訪問ではケンブリッジの良さにせよ悪さにせよ語ることは到底不可能であるが、本書を予め一読しておけば多少なりとも違った印象を持ったに違いない。やはり最低限の予習は必要である。1年半のケンブリッジ滞在記とも言える本書は大変読みやすく初心者には最適な文献ではないかと思った。著者本人の体験談も実に面白いし、臨場感に富んでいる。率直に申して、本書はケンブリッジ（大学）に関わる優れたナビゲーターの役割を果たしている。いつか私もケンブリッジで在外研究を送りたいと思う人間の一人であるが、本書を読んでその思いをより強くイメージできたことは大きな収穫であったと考える。自分の専門分野の論文を海外雑誌、例えばCambridge Journal of Economicsに載せることもまた大きな夢の一つであろう。なお余談であるが、「ケンブリッジでの暮らし」を綴った第3章には、「ケンブリッジでパントに乗らなければ、最もケンブリッジ的な遊びを満喫したことにはならない」（127頁）という発言があるが、幸いにも私はパント経験をすることができた。ゆっくりと川を進む小船の上での瞑想は実に優雅であり贅沢であると心底思ったものである。今度はもっと長く滞在し、ケンブリッジ大学の醍醐味を思う存分味わってみたいものである。その日を夢見て日々の勉学に励みたい。

他の日本人作家にありがちな、イギリスに対する憧れだとかイギリスを崇高な位置に置いて脚色するといったようなギミックを排除して、事実を客観的に書いているところが良いと思った。義務を課さない、下手したら遊んでいても構わない、こんな遊学（！）制度があるなんて、大学の先生は羨ましい限りです。ただ、著者のように在外研究員としてイギリスへ行ったときの場合と不良外人として行ったときの場合での、日本人の取り扱われ方が違うのは言うまでもありませんけど。

それにしても、日本の「大学教授」と呼ばれる人々は、この本の著者のように、本人が「大学教授」であるということを恥じるほど、世界的に見たら底辺に位置していて、ろくに英語も喋れずに、イギリスで「大学教授」と呼ばれている人々とは、決して能力の上では対等ではないんですね。「アメリカン・プロフェッサー」ならぬ「ジャパニーズ・プロフェッサー」ですか。辛いですね（苦笑）。

経営史研究者である著者は、在外研究の機会を得て、ケンブリッジ大学のカレッジでの研究生活についてファーストハンドに知ることとなった。本書は、そのさいに書いたイギリス滞在記である。これまで、多くのイギリス論、ケンブリッジ論が日本人の手によって書かれたが、本書は歴史研究者の手になるものとして興味深い。評者には、名高いサプル教授が実名で登場するのがおもしろかった。イギリスの学会での人事の話もでてくるのだが、それは読んでのお楽しみ。本書を林望氏や藤原正彦氏の著作と比較しても、よいのではないだろうか。
