二十世紀後半に飛躍的に発展した癌研究の物語です。
癌遺伝子仮説から癌ウイルスの発見、そこからの癌遺伝子の発見、
癌遺伝子、癌抑制遺伝子の正体が暴かれ、
癌遺伝子たちのもとは「細胞増殖を制御する遺伝子群」であった
ことが明らかにされ、その後本当の黒幕であるＤＮＡ修復遺伝子が

発見されるまで、めまぐるしく動いていくストーリーに引き込まれてしまいました。
研究者たちの人間模様もリアルに描かれており（著者自身が研究者
だからだと思います）、とくに医学生にはいい教科書がわりだと
思います。

初版は1996年で、内容はやや古い点もあるとは思いますが、一般向けに書かれてあり、がん遺伝子研究を始める学生、研究者の導入として、一度は読んでおくべき、大変良い本だと思います。
