他人とってわかりやすい文章を作るときには，日本語と英語双方に共通する原則があることを教えてくれる好著だと思います．さらに，「この文を英語に置き換えることはできるだろうか」と，自分や他人の文への批評眼も身につけることができます．内容以前に，文章の形式もある程度は重要だと教えてくれます．皆さんが指摘しているように，文章を書くことの多い方は目を通すことをお勧めします．

コンピュータで文章を解析させるための技術のひとつであり、言語学の新分野である「談話文法」を基にとにかく内容を相手に伝えるための作法が書かれた書です。内容は特に英語に限定しておらず、日本語も上手くなれます。「わかりやすい文章って何?」と疑問に思った人はとりあえず読んでみて下さい。

　分かりやすい文章とはどういうものか？他人の文書を読んで、それが分かりやすいかどうかは比較的客観的に判断できますが、自分の文書の場合は判断しにくいものです。

　しかし、客観的な基準があれば、自分の文章に対しても判断できるようになります。その際に、本書で述べられている「古い情報から新しい情報へと進む」という「談話文法」の規則に従っているかどうかという判断基準を持つことで、客観的に分かりやすいかどうかを判断することが可能となります。本書は、この他にも判断基準となる材料をいくつか与えてくれます。
　英文だけではなく、日本語でも同様のことが言えるので、日本語の文章を書くのにも役立ちます。
