元禄時代の尾張藩士、朝日文左衛門の２８年に渡る日記をもとに、当時の人々の生活や風俗、習慣をあきらかにしていく。

文左衛門のサラリーマンとしての生活は月に３日、役所に出仕すればよいというもので、あまり現代とは比較にならないが、同僚が仕事上の不始末で簡単に自殺してしまうのには驚いた。どうも人の命は今よりかなり軽めであったようだ。

ゴシップやスキャンダルも多い。本書の半分以上は、密通、心中といった話である。奥さんの浮気に悩む夫も多く、女性はこの時代、さほど窮屈ではなかったようにも思う。日本人の性道徳の一端がうかがえて大変興味深い。

江戸時代のお畳奉行の書いた日記です。彼はとにかくすごい記録魔で、ウワサ話から生活の中の些細なことまで記しており、本当の生の江戸時代の文化をありありと知ることができます。

この本の面白いところは、平和になった江戸時代の武士の、あまりの情けなさや、乱れすぎな町人の風俗など、赤裸々に書かれているところです。酒ばかり飲んで、いつも吐いてばかりいる武士。剣術もちょっと習うとすぐ免許皆伝になってしまう。男女関係のだらしなさ。。

彼が生きていた時代はちょうど近松門左衛門の影響で心中がはやっていたり、生類憐みの令が出されたりしています。歴史的に大変有名な出来事が起きている時、実際はどうだったのか。非常に興味深く読めました。

ただ、文章ですが、解説がたくさんありますが、江戸時代の文ですので読むのにちょっと疲れました。解説といっても堅苦しいものではなく、読み物的に書かれています。

ロングセラーです。
元禄時代、記録好きな武士がずっと日記をつけていた。
仕事のことはまずまず。
うわさ話はたくさん。
彼の周囲に起こった出来事を記している。
家族関係、恋愛や心中。
生活でかかったお金の話。
武道の堕落、賄賂の話。
現代とそんなに違わないと言えばそう。

脚色のない当時の一武士の視点で書かれているので、
本当の江戸時代が見えてきます。
そんなにドラマティックではありません。
そこがリアルです。

ただ文章は読みづらいです。集中力が必要でした。
