漢字をみているだけでイマジネーションが刺激されるようになる素晴らしい本。 「雲」という文字が雲の挾間から龍の尾がかいま見える所をあらわしていたりすることを知ると、街中のつまらないキャッチコピーをみてもイメージがそそられるようになります。 ２万円以上する「字通」を買ってしまおうかと思ってしまうすごい本です（まだ買ってませんが）。

ただ、文章が濃密すぎて私のヌルい頭で読むとときどきわかんなくなってしまうところが星一つ減でした。

なんとも滋味にあふれる、百話がきらめく。１０の単元ごとに１０話。漢字研究の第一人者ならではの、あふれるばかりの情報が、濃密に展開される。新書版というスタイルとはいえ、漢字がもつすべてのエッセンスはここに凝集されている。

　感銘を受けた箇所をあげているときりがないが、“あとがき”にあった、次の文章は、今、まさに漢字を取り巻く状況を的確に表しているようなので、引用させていただく。

『明治・大正期の詩人たちは、ことばの意味や音感はもとより、その用字の視覚的な印象、活字の大きさ、紙面での字の排列にまで心を配ったのものである。文学や思想は、生活語のように言語過程としてあるものではない。字の形体は表現に関与し、またその美学をささえてきたものである。』
　!文学は、漢字があってこそ、芸術として昇華する。

金文や甲骨文にみられる文字を素材として，日常的な漢字が持っている深遠なイメージを解き明かしていく。日常的に触れている漢字たちが，信じられないほど神秘的な出自を持っていることを濃密な文章でつづっていくさまは圧巻です。この本を知ってからはちょっとした漢字をみても，白黒の文字が色彩を帯びているように感じました。
