強弁、詭弁ってこういう事なのね、ということからそれに対しての論理的な対処、論理学の入門をわかりやすく説いてくれる本。でも強弁者の人柄によって論理が通じたり、論理なんて関係無く話しが進んでしまうのが現実、ということも書いてあり「論理学」が人をねじ伏せるためのものでもなく、自分を高めるためのものというのも論理学自体に興味がひかれた。論理流行の昨今、入門篇としては最適だと思います。

１９７６年に出た本で、いまだに売れて読まれている超ロングセラー本です。
詭弁というと、人を騙すようなイメージがあり、論理学というと、帰納法とかややこしいイメージか、流行りのロジカルシンキングのようなイメージがあると思います。

が、この本は、もっと、実践的なコミュニケーションをテーマにしている、といったほうが近いでしょう。世の中の「いいくるめる」とは、どういうパターンが多いか、それに対処するには、どうしたらいいか、議論の渦に巻き込まれるのではなく、一歩身をひいて考える視点を提供してくれます。

読み物としても、非常に面白いです。分かりやすい会話例をたくさん使っていて、「学問くささ」は、全然感じません。

「どうにも腑に落ちない」「いつも言い負かされてしまう」こんなことを思ったことはないだろうか？
　本書は論理学を学ぶことによって、詭弁や強弁に対処し、むしろそれらの理不尽さ、破綻ぶりを楽しもうという趣旨の本である。
　よく使われる詭弁術の論理から、数学の世界で有名なパズル（パラドックス）などが紹介されており、どれも平易に書かれているため、初心者にとっても難しくない。問題（例）の数はさほど多くないが、簡単な問題から順番に紹介されていくので、すっと入り込めるだろう。
　
　ただ、本書を読んだだけで、詭弁術が身に付いたり、詭弁に対処できたりするわけではない。繰り返すが、あくまで、論理学の面から詭弁を解き明かし、それを楽しもうという趣旨の本である。
