「太平洋戦争とはなんだったのか？」ということについて考えたい。

ある人が私にいった。「戦後の政治や今の自衛隊の状況を理解するには、終戦を理解しなければならない。終戦を理解するには、第二次世界大戦を理解しなければならない。そして、どうして第二次世界大戦に日本が参戦したのかを考えなければならない。これを辿っていくとどうしてもすくなとくとも明治までを視野にいれて歴史を学ばなければ現代を理解できないうことになる。」そして、私に勧めてくれたのがこの「太平洋戦争」という本だ。

大変な労作だと思う。正直、この本を読むまでいかに日本が緒戦で勝利をおさめ、いかに終盤にいたるにつれて日本が、日本人が苦しい、すさまじい戦いをしなければならなかったか、知らなかった。兵士だけでも２００万人以上の戦死者が出たと言う事実をよく理解していなかった。また、農協から食管法、大政翼賛会から自民党、それから多分電通にいたる戦後の政治や社会の要素が戦時中に形作られたかのプロセスがわかった。

逆にいえば、いまの軟弱な我々から見れば、どれだけ燃料も、食料も、情報も、技術も、弾丸も、兵器も、不足している中で我々の父祖達がいかに戦ったという事実をこの本から学びたい。いまの我々が、戦犯、戦争責任ということを語るときには、いかにも自分達は正しい岸に立っていて、戦争について意思決定をした指導者達を断罪する資格があるような錯覚をもたらす。しかし、戦犯とされた彼等が日本の国を滅亡させようと意図してこの戦争を起こした訳ではない。企図しなかったから、罪がないというのではない。一度は、自分自身を当時の状況においてどのような選択肢を選べたか、どれだけ恐怖心を自分で克服できるか、やってみるべきだということだ。

今は、ここから安易な教訓を引き出したくはない。ただ、この歴史の事実と向きあうために、本書を再読したい。

　太平洋戦争の開始から終了までの戦闘・戦略を日本・連合国両方の側を並行的に記述して、その実像を描き出そうという著作。
　確かに、ある作戦が、状況に対する誤解におおきくもとづいていたとき、その結果がどう現れたかを見ていくことは、戦闘を考える上で、結果だけにもとづいた一方的な反省よりも意味があるようだ。

　それにしても、勝利のために数万人の犠牲を予測する作戦を遂行する立場、命令する立場というのは、私の日常から想像するのはなかなかに難しいが、まさにそうしたことが実際に行われたということに衝撃を覚えずにはいられない。この時期、さらに中国方面やヨーロッパにおいて、同じような戦闘が行われていたということを考えると、まさに想像を絶した状況と言える。

太平洋戦争のことは歴史学でもまだきちんと評価されていないためか学校教育では戦争の悲惨さばかりが強調されて全体像が見えてこず、本屋に行っても適当な本が並んでいない。いろいろな立場からいろいろな本が出ているのだが日本人はまだこの戦争を客観視できないでいるらしい。そんな中、すこしふるくはあるのだが、この本は客観的に書かれていて、とても好感が持てた。庶民や一兵卒の悲しみは伝わってこないが、冷静に戦闘を描くとき戦争の悲惨さは伝わってくる。誰を非難するわけでもない書き方が、安心して最後まで読ませる。
