原 研哉
1958年生まれ。グラフィックデザイナー。武蔵野美術大学教授。2002年より、無印良品のアートディレクションを担当。「もの」ではなく「こと」のデザインを志向している。デザインという語の意味を問い直しながら世界各地を巡回し、広く影響を与えた「RE‐DESIGN:日常の二十一世紀」展(世界インダストリアルデザインビエンナーレ、インダストリアル・グラフィック両部門大賞、毎日デザイン賞受賞)をはじめとして、「HAPTIC」「SENSEWARE」など既存の価値観を更新するキーワードを擁する展覧会を制作し世界に巡回。また、長野オリンピックの開・閉会式プログラムや、愛知万博のプロモーションでは、深く日本文化に根ざしたデザインを展開した。AGF、JT、KENZOなどの商品デザインのほか、松屋銀座リニューアル、森ビル、梅田病院サイン計画などを手がける。一連のデザイン活動によって日本文化デザイン賞ほか受賞多数。著書『デザインのデザイン』(岩波書店、2003年)は、サントリー学芸賞を受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

日本に独特の美意識を表す言葉として「余白の美」という日本語を
定着させたのは誰なのだろう。そしてそのとき決まって挙げられる
のが等伯の松林図や龍安寺石庭、武蔵のモズの画などで、私たちは
長い間、日本の美学はその言葉で語り尽くされたような錯覚に陥っ
てきた。しかし著者は本書の中でこの使い古された安易な言葉を
使っていない。
ドナルド・キーン氏は日本人の美の概念を、「暗示ないし余情＝
suggestion」「いびつさないし不規則性＝irregularity」「簡潔
＝simplicity」などの言葉で表した。
デザインの現場の中で「白」を多角的に考察していたら、不思議に
Cool Japanが浮かび上がってきました。この本は、白を論考する
ことによって、これまでの「日本らしさ」を言葉に置き換える
ことを試みた先人達の表現を更新する内容になっていると思います。
日英併記で、「白」の概念が世界的に更新されてしまいました。

原さんの世界。白の世界。考え方が綴られた1冊である。原さんのファンにとっては手にとるべき1冊である。『デザインのデザイン』に続く書下ろしの本書は十分に読む価値がある。しかしコストパフォーマンスを考えると☆３つである。立ち読みでも十分に読みきれる内容である。

「白」について、語源や歴史、日本文化に引き付けて考察しています。著者の「白」に対する思いが作品や空間などの豊かな情景描写とともに浮かび上がってきます。読んでいて「空白」の美しさを感じさせる著作です。読む分量が少なく割高に感じますが、英訳がついているのでまあまあかなと。英訳に価値を見いだせるようであれば買いだと思います。
