4.0 out of 5 stars 村上訳の魅力が存分に発揮されている, 2008/1/27
「ソングス」な本ですが、メロディよりも「詩」に重点がおかれています。

もちろんＣＤがついているわけではないので、必然的にそうなっていくわけですが、
村上さんが大好きな曲からのセレクトで、構成されているので、読者にとって、
また一般的に知られているかどうかはもちろん意識されているわけではありません。

このため、先入観無く英語の歌詞を見て、そして村上さんの訳である日本語の詩を
読んで、その世界に入っていくことができます。
彼の１曲１曲に対する愛情のエッセイも秀逸です。
和田さんのイラストも世界観を表していて素敵です。
曲が聞こえなくても、知らなくても、もちろん知っていても、シンガーのことを
良く知らなくても、知っていても、共感できる作品。

意外な発見と喜びを感じさせてくれました。

でも、もちろんこれから聞いてみます♪

結構沢山の音楽を聴いてきたけれど、あんまり歌詞の意味にこだわらなかったような気がしています。こだわって高校の時代から自分で訳してきた村上さんとぼや〜っと聞いてきた僕と、ほぼ同年代でありながらえらい隔たりができてしもうたと今回再認識した次第です（昔から思っておりますが）。特に「Miss Otis Regrets」の意味にはびっくりした。エラ・フィッツジェラルドの「マダ〜ム」というフレーズだけが心地よく響いていたのですが・・訳詞を読んでびっくりしました。他もただ詳しい解説を通り超えてその時代・背景を取り込んだ実に感慨深い本になっております。「Ｇａｌｖｅｓｔｏｎ」とか「Ｓｕｉｃｉｄｅ　Ｉｓ　Ｐａｉｎｌｅｓｓ」なんかは時代ですね。こういう聞き方をすればひとかどに人間になれるという薀蓄の深さです。ただ驚くばかり。和田さんもすごいですわ。

収められている1曲々々について、ムラカミさんによる訳詞とオリジナルテキスト、ムラカミさんのエッセイと和田さんのイラストという贅沢な4点セットである。
1曲が1つのチャプター（章）になっているわけだが、チャプターごとにその4点セットから得られるフィット感が異なるところが面白い。
ある曲では、ムラカミさんの見事な訳詞に感嘆するかと思えば、ある曲ではオリジナルテキストのほうがすんなりアタマに（というか心に）入ってくる(どちらかといえば後者の方が多い)。
またある曲では、和田さんのイラストがなんともいえぬゴキゲンな出来栄えだったり。例えば、イングリッド・バーグマンのポートレイトははっとするほどキュートでセクシーだ。
そしてもちろん、ムラカミさんのエッセイ。音楽評論はムラカミさんの持ちネタの一つだが、旅モノのエッセイと並んでうっかりすると小説以上に僕のお気に入りである。

なかには僕の手持ちのCDに収録されている曲もあり、そいつを引っ張り出して改めて聴いてみるのも楽しい。
そして、「あ、コレ買ってみよう」てな感じでチェックを入れたアルバムが何枚かあったりもします。
僕はムラカミさんは現代米国文学のゲートウェイ（ムラカミさんを通して例えば、レイ･カーヴァーを知りましたとか）の役割を少なからず果たしていると思うのですが、ある種の音楽についても同様ですな。
