とにかく、読後感が暖かです。(今まで作品よりずっと舞台となる時代が古いせいでしょうか)
8歳で入水した安徳天皇の魂が鎮まるまでの軌跡を描いているのですが、宇月原さんの小説には付き物の「異国の邪法」は幻術どまりで、
前3作のような息詰まる禍々しさはごく薄く、幻想的な雰囲気のほうが強いようです。
神器に守られた安徳天皇・洞窟を覆う紅水晶・梅の花の下の実朝・砂浜で戯れる二人の子供・南宋の終焉・・・
もちろん、鎌倉初期の政争も絡むわけですが、それは実朝の決意の前に霞んでしまいます。
前3作を読んでこの本を敬遠している方、損してるかもしれませんよ！

ファンタジーとも知らずに読み始めたのですが、はじめは物語の世界に入っていくのに少し時間がかかりました。特に第一部は源実朝を中心に吾妻鏡を織り交ぜながら語られるのですが、古文のかもし出す重々しさや鎌倉時代の鎌倉という質実剛健で妙に現実的なイメージと、幻想的な描写がどうしてもしっくり来ず、なかなかファンタジーの世界に浸れませんでした。それに比べるとマルコ・ポーロが語り部となる第二部は、海の向こうが舞台のせいか、ファンタジーとして私にとってはなじみやすく、一気に読んでしまいました。

タイトルをからは、生き延びた安徳天皇が冒険の旅をするような物語を想像していたのですが、安徳天皇が直接の主人公ではなく、安徳天皇の生きた情念が、鎌倉時代の日本、そしてクビライ・カーンの大元帝国をも巻き込む歴史を動かしていた、という話。その壮大なアイデアに度肝を抜かれる一方、人物や情景の描写が細やかで美しく、壮絶な戦闘シーンでさえも夢の一場面のようになんだかうっとりと読んでしまいます。

日頃ファンタジーを読みつけないせいか、最後のクライマックス近く、夢とうつつの境がなくなってくる辺りになると、夢幻の描写に息苦しくなってしまいました。

広州の砂浜に漢字を書き連ね、夢中で筆談をして友情を育む、日本と南宋の二人の少年皇帝の姿が、目に浮かぶようです。
　
　それにしても、博多に攻め寄せた元の艦隊を撃退したのは、暴風ではなく、塩乾球と塩みつ球の威力だったとはね。

　宇月原さんの博学博識に支えられた筆力、想像力には感服するばかりです。
