MARY RENAULT の名著　“PERSIAN BOY”が、ようやく日本語で読めるようになりました。
アカイメネース朝ペルシアの帝王に愛された美少年「宦官」バゴーアースと、彼を我がものにして寵愛したマケドニアーのアレクサンドロス大王との関係が、欧米人にしては珍しく偏見なしに書かれた秀作です。
娯楽映画が出版界を左右したのであれば、はなはだ嘆かわしいことではありますが、なにはあれアレクサンドロス大王に関心のある向きには必読の１冊です。
これを機に、彼女の「アレクサンドロス三部作」などの小説が今後、次々に邦訳されて行くことを願ってやみません。

メアリ・ルノーの繊細な視線と筆致で綴られたアレクサンドロスの姿は、非常にリアルで存在感がある。
語り手のバゴアスが、美しいだけでなく誇り高い少年として描かれ大変魅力的である上に、その彼がとことん惚れぬいた男、として描かれるアレクサンドロスはこれまた魅力的でないはずが無い。
豪奢と退廃の洗練を極めたペルシア帝国育ちのバゴアス少年が、「野蛮な」マケドニア軍の中に放り込まれ、カルチャー･ショックを受けまくり目を丸くするシーンは微笑ましい。
しかし、様々な民族の統一をめざしたアレクサンドロスにとって、彼の統治は笑い事では済まない深刻な異文化間の軋轢に絶えず悩まされたことも事実だったろう。
東西文化の融合を成した、といわれるアレクサンドロス―歴史小説としても非常に優れたこの作品、たいへん読みやすく楽しめる上に、勉強になる。

コリンファレルの｢アレキサンダー」を　観る前に　この本を見つけました。映画では　小姓としてアレキサンダーにつかえ　踊りを披露してキスをされていたのが　バゴアスです。そのバゴアスの目を透してみたアレキサンダー大王のことと,宦官となったバゴアスの　運命について書いてあります。大王の寵愛を受けながらも　ヘスティファイオンへの嫉妬など　映画が表舞台とすれば　舞台裏から見た<バゴアスは　みた・・・＞と　どこかのＴＶドラマのようでしたが　しかし当時の様子がわかり易く書いてあり　とても分厚い本ですが　あっという間に読み終わってしまいました。この本を読んでＤＶＤを観たところ　ストーリーの奥がかいまみられ，興味深く観れました。
