あくまで地を貫く生き方しかできない若者、ヴェルチンジェトリクスが、
父の遺志を継ぐべくガリア諸部族を決起させ、大国ローマに反旗をあげる。
これに対するは、ローマ政界を渡るため自分を演じることも厭わない中年男、ガリア総督カエサル。
混沌とするガリアで自らが拠って立つ国家を背景にした戦いが、
次第に個人の生き方のレベルに下がってくる。

あくまで地を貫いて生きる若者に、
圧倒される本当の自分を見失った中年男は混乱を覚えるが、
決戦を前に自分の心中を吐露することで自分を取り戻し、
同時に周囲の心をもつかむ。

最後の決戦レシア包囲戦では数十万の軍勢の対峙という仕掛けがありながらも、
著者があくまで若者と中年男の確執に描写をしぼったのは、圧巻である。

塩野七生の「ローマ人の物語」（新潮社）でカエサルのファンになった者からすると、分厚く小説的に肉付けされたカエサルの連綿と続く心理描写（それをくどいと感じるか否かは好みの問題かな）がうれしく思える反面苦くもある。本書のカエサルは全然すごくないのである。とてもガリア戦争に勝利をもたらした傑物とは思えない。マゾ的な喜びを感じられるなら別だが、こんなカエサルは見たくなかったのだ。対するガリア側の総大将は漫画「北斗の拳」に出てきそうなキャラクターだった。下の話がやけに多いのもこの人のためだ。佐藤氏の文章は会話文や心理描写を全部ひっくるめ改行なしで全部地の文で続けてしまうことが多い。これが個性的な文体なのだと言われればそれまでだけど、やっぱり読みにくい。北方謙三氏の「水滸伝」（集英社）の方がいろんな面でこっちよりも好きだ。

話の筋はさておき、描写のあまりの幼稚さにこれが
直木賞作家の文章かと絶句した。まるでベルサイユ
のバラの漫画を字で書いたようである。馬鹿馬鹿し
くて最後まで読めなかった。
