不思議な本である。
世界の国々様々な事柄についてデータが紹介される。
「日本は第何位？」ということもわかる。
そしてそのあいまにプロの旅行者である著者の現地体験が語られる。
その部分は旅行記のエッセンスを取り出したようで、たいへん面白い。
その、現地体験の「クローズアップ」と、「世界第何位」というデータによる「パン（俯瞰）」が絶妙に組み合わされ、なんとも良い味わいを醸し出している。
それが実に面白く、あっという間に読んでしまった。
旅行記を読みながら地理の学習ができてしまうという意味で「お得」な本でもある。

ダイゴさんの本は殆どすべてだと言っていいほどよく読んできました。
いずれも、海外添乗員やタイ・バンコクでの生活を綴ったもので、笑いあり涙ありのハチャメチャにユニークな本でした。
本書も「日本は世界で第何位？」といった野次馬根性で興味本意をそそるユニークなタイトルをつけています。
それも今回はダイゴさん初めての新書判です。
本書の構成は、ダイゴさんが海外添乗員として奔走し、またタイ・バンコクでの生活体験やトルコ・イスタンブールやインドなどバックパッカーとしての放浪の旅をしてきて、そこで見たもの聞いたもの感じたものをトピックにして、様々な日本の世界ランク付けについて講評をするといった形です。
そのため、堅苦しくなく庶民的にフレンドリーな仕上がりとなっています。
込み入った薀蓄がない分、内容に少々薄っぺらいものを感じるかもしれませんが、旅好きな方、日本の世界ランクが気になる方など、リラックスして気軽に読めますのでオススメします。

　日本人は自分を相対化するというか、正しく客観的に認識するのが苦手だといわれ、「日本語は世界一難しい」とか「日本経済はナンバーワン」とか「旧日本軍は世界で最も残酷だった」とかとにかくエキセントリックな方向に進みたがる。
　本書は著者の経験から、ユニークなエピソードを踏まえつつさまざまなランキングで日本が何位に位置するのかを見ていく。見ているだけで飽きることはないし、意外に漠然と持っていた「常識」が思い込みに過ぎないことに多々出くわす。
　世界を知って、正しくわれわれ自身を客観的に認識してみよう。
