小林秀雄の言葉を編年体で４１６個集めたものである。引用は新漢字、現代仮名遣いによった『小林秀雄全作品』から行われている。小林の生涯を２４歳から８０歳まで１４のブロックに分けて構成する。各章の最初には「小林秀雄の歳月」というタイトルで、その文学的足跡を簡潔に記す。他に巻末に出典年譜が付けられている。
　代名詞が誰を指すのかについては〔〕で注を付すが、それ以外はまったく注釈の類はされていない。研究者による解説もない。引かれている言葉についてはまずは順当だと言えるが、未完のベルクソン論である「感想」や遺作の正宗白鳥論からはされていない。

　ひとわたり小林秀雄の文学を概観するのには便利である。個別に取り出すことによって、あらためてその言葉の「力」と思索の深さに魅力を覚える。類書も無いので、入門書としては合格と言えよう。しかし、文相互に統一性が無いので、初めて親しむ人には難しい言葉もあるだろう。その点では解説を付けた意味項目別のアンソロジーが専門家の手で編まれる必要がある。また、批評の真髄を極めた文勢を感じるには作品の全体を読んでほしい。この本によって、小林の文学に興味を持ったならば、ぜひとも各作品に親しんでもらいたい。

小林秀雄語録。小林秀雄の文章を部分的に抜き出したものなので文脈の中で読むことは出来ませんが、ドキリとするほど力強い文章です。人生に真摯に向き合い、徹底的に思考を重ねたその過程が裏付けになっているのだと思いますが、これほど力強い文筆家は他にちょっと見当たりません。パラパラめくって拾い読みするだけでも刺激になります。

好奇心、感受性、観察力の鋭い著者が、様々な時期に得た洞察を表した言葉を集めた名言集です。語られた対象は、文学、美術、人間関係、生き方など多岐に及びます。読んで改めて気づくことや、深く共感できる記述が多く、この本を買って良かった、と心から思った1冊です。
