「盛岡冷麺物語」（小西正人著）は、いまでは岩手・盛岡の名物となった盛岡冷麺を生み出した在日コリアンの生き様を描いたルポだ。あの独特の味わいを持つ冷麺は、それ以外のものを作り出せない在日の「舌の記憶」よって生み出されたものだった。被差別の中でそれをむしろ、パワーにして武器にして生き残った者のみが生み出せた奇跡の料理だったのだ。ぜひ、本書と合わせて読まれることをお薦めする。

関西の被差別部落出身の著者が，自身のアイデンティティーを探る意味で，世界の被差別社会の食を紹介していく．著者が子供の頃から親しんでいた料理が，その‘むら’以外では食されていなかったことを初めて知った時の衝撃が，ベースになっている．
そのような，被差別社会の食には，多くの共通点があることが，フィールドワークによって見出されていく．アメリカの黒人社会のソウルフード（フライドチキンもその1種である），ブラジルの黒人奴隷の末裔の食，ブルガリア・戦乱の中のイラクのロマの食，ネパールのサルキ，そして著者の食べていた日本の被差別の食卓．それぞれの共通点は，その‘むら’以外では口にすることのない食材を，生きていくために食べていかざるを得ない状況があったということである．フライドチキンも，白人の食べる鶏を焼いた料理の余りの手羽などを，黒人奴隷が揚げて柔らかくして食べたことから始まっているのである．また，病死牛馬を食せざるを得なかったという点も共通している．
著者は，差別の問題点をテーゼとしているわけではないが，食を通じて被差別の構造について改めて考えさせられた．ステロタイプな同和問題の話には出てこない，その社会に根付いた一つの文化である．

大阪の被差別部落出身の著者が、各国
1アメリカ、ブラジルにおける黒人差別
2中東・東欧におけるロマ（ジプシー）の差別
3ネパールにおけるヒンズーのカーストの差別
4日本の被差別部落の差別
のなかでの被差別者の食卓を描き、差別の起源などを探っていきます。著者はまだ若いようですが、その文章は荒削りながら知性を感じさせる魅力的なものです。また、被差別の世界を描いてはいますが、著者の意図的な努力により悲壮感をあまり感じさせません。著者は、「悲壮感を感じさせることが差別を助長させるという危険性」に気付き、悲壮感を感じさせずに事実を伝えることで差別の無意味さをなくしうることを意図したのだと思います。言い換えれば、「被差別外の論者が差別の無意味さを批判したところでそれ自体が差別となり得る」という矛盾があることを知りえた著者が、内から理性的にその解決を図っているとだということです。
