「禅的生活」を実践するという人気の和尚さんによるエッセイ集である。だいたいにおいて超然とした禅僧にしてはやけに時事ネタが多いのが気になるが、それも一種の方便だと考えれば納得がいく。いろいろなところで仏教につながる物事を発見するのが、説法の基本的な姿勢であるから。ダイレクトに仏法を説かれても、よく理解できなかろう。

ただ、方便が広がりすぎ、という印象を私は受けた。色々とためになる話をしてくれるので非常に参考になるが、全体に重いのだ。歴史講釈や科学の説明など、読んでて疲れてしまった。玄侑氏は教養がありすぎる。広い教養は僧侶には不可欠だが、ときに災いすることもある。説法と学問とは、目的も手段も違ってしかるべきだ、というのがこの本を読んでの第一の感想である。贅沢な要求をしているようだが。

禅宗の現役僧侶で作家でもある玄侑宗久氏が出した初めてのエッセイ集。新聞や雑誌に掲載された２７本。時事ネタを含むが、加筆修正することなく掲載したとのこと。書名が『釈迦に説法』なので、筆者自身はかなり気が引ける部分もあったらしい。「はじめに」でお断りを入れているほどである。だが、本文を読んでいっても、不遜と感じるような部分はない。とても読みやすい、本来の「説法」が文章化されているといえる。この新書を通して書かれている根本的な内容は、おそらく、近年人気の養老孟司氏が思っていることと同じだと思う。その表現方法が違うだけで。ぜひ両者の対談が聞きたいなと思っていたが、どうもこのたび、『ちくま』がその場を提供したようである。早く読みたいな。最後に、玄侑氏が全体と通して一番言いたかっただろう言葉を引用。“書を捨てて町へ出よう、と書いた詩人がいたが、私は最後に申し上げたい。　町に出るのもいいけれど、書も捨てることはないけれど、ともかく瞑想しよう。それこそが「釈迦の説法」。釈迦力（しゃかりき）の内容なのだ。「釈迦に説法」よりも、はるかに大事なのである。”たぶん、養老氏の言う「身体を使え」と同じ意味だ、これ。

この禅僧で作家の著者の考えが散りばめられたエッセイ集。
表紙の裏の
"息苦しい世の中を、「楽」に「安心」して生きていくきっかけを教えてくれる。
一話一話、読むほどに、心が少しずつ軽くなっていく"
どういう時にこの本にめぐり合うのかは人それぞれ。
これに惹かれる人もいるでしょうし、逆にこういう本だと思うと「こういうのを読んで安心するのは現実からの逃避でしかない。頑張らなきゃ」と思う人もいるでしょう。
頑張るのも大事、で、頑張ったらどうするの？まだ頑張るの？その後は？
そんなことが書いてあります。読んでどう思うかも人それぞれだけど、読んでみると、頑張る人も頑張らない人もそのことをもう少し違った目からも見れるような気がします。
