２００３年４月に『バカの壁』が出版され、
その１年後、再び新潮新書の一冊に加えられたのがこの本です。

出版された当時は、まだ『バカの壁』がひたすら売れ続けていた頃で、
「何だか同じようなタイトルの本が出たな」と思って距離をおいて
いましたが、実際に買って読んでみると、
買う前までの先入観を訂正したくなりました。
こっちの方が主著かもしれないな、と。

ここでは抽象的な「死」は語られていません。
死ぬ前も、死んだ後も、人は人。
その同じ視線で「死体」が語られるのですが、
不思議と見えてくるのはそれを取り巻く周囲の姿です。

前回同様、文章化されたのは新潮社の編集者の方で、
この本は養老先生の書き下ろしではありません。
今回はその文章化のスタイルに加え、テーマがテーマだけに
私の頭の中には通夜を思わせるしんみり感が漂いました。

あとがきによれば、この本の「難しい」版は、
筑摩書房から出ている『人間科学』だそうです。

　「バカの壁」と続けて読むほうが良いでしょう。著者の養老さんもあとがきで、続きだと言っていますし(だったら、薄い本なんだし、最初から1冊で出して欲しいのも正直な話し。笑)。
　正直、「バカの壁」はありきたりな話と、後半のやや難解な話でちんぷんかんぷんになりかけましたが、こちらは安定して理解しやすい話でまあまあ面白かったです。しかし、相変わらず強引な意見も多多あるので、やはりこれも一つの考えとして自分の頭に入れ、自分の脳細胞を使って理解しましょう。すべては自分で考える事が大事なのですから。
　ただ最終章の「日々回復不能」はしっかりと心に刻んでいきたいと思います。この本はそこだけ読んでも充分にためになる本だとおもいますから。

「バカの壁」は中盤あたりから妙に壮大な雰囲気になってきて、途中で読むのをやめてしまいました。これも途中から「おいおい、どうなっちゃうの？」という嫌いがありましたが、その後は大変わかりやすく、なるほどなーるほど、と思いながらすぐ読み終えてしまいました。なるほどと思ってしまうこと自体、著者が言うように普段見据えていない証拠なのでしょうね。
「エリートは本来、汚れた仕事も背負わなくてはならなかった」という記述は重要で、「はぁー、なるほどー！」でした。そういう、汚れた部分の持つリアルさがどんどん失われて、人間ですらも情報と数値に置き換えられていく。

仕事柄よく葬儀に参列します。今では棺をカマに入れるのに、コンテナで運ぶのが主流です。強烈だった例として、リモコンで動くコンテナの後ろから、遺族がついて行くっていうのがありました。コンテナが独りでに動いて、遺族の先導をしているわけで、そうなるとコンテナに乗っかっているあれは一体何だ？とわからなくなってきます。死とか死の儀式ですらも、色や香りのない無機質なものになっていくのでしょうか。
曖昧にしとけば良いものを明文化して、越えなくてもいい一線をわざわざ越えなくてもいい、という著者の考えに大納得でした。
