　日本にはイギリスの海洋文学にあたるものがない、といわれてきたが、江戸時代に漂流して帰還した者たちから聴取した、何作もの「漂流記」こそ、日本独自の海洋文学ではないのか。ここに、1793年、奥州石巻を出港し、難破してロシア極東沿岸に漂着した「若宮丸」の漂流聞書き『環海異聞』がある。極寒の辛苦に耐えてロシアに10年、生き残った津太夫ら四人の水夫は、鎖国日本へ開港を促すロシアの使節船に乗船し、日本人初の世界一周の旅に出る。夢に何度も見た故国の地を踏んだ彼らを待っていたのは、厳しい取り調べだった。しかし、彼らは『環海異聞』という貴重な証言を残してくれた……。
　これまで、六篇の「漂流小説」を書いてきた私（著者）は石巻に赴き、200年前、「若宮丸」が出発したかもしれない港を遠望する高台に立ち、深い感慨にふけるのである。

日本には海洋文学が存在しないと言われるが、それは違っている。例えば―寛政五(一七九三)年、遭難しロシア領に漂着した若宮丸の場合。辛苦の十年の後、津太夫ら四人の水主はロシア船に乗って、日本人初の世界一周の果て故国に帰還。その四人から聴取した記録が『環海異聞』である。こうした漂流記こそが日本独自の海洋文学であり魅力的なドラマの宝庫なのだ。

内容はいいんですが、ちょっとページ数が少ないかも・・・
ちなみに吉村氏が書いた６篇の漂流小説とは
「漂流｣、「船長泣く」、「島抜け」、「花渡る海」、｢アメリカ彦蔵」、「大黒屋光太夫」の６篇です。

新書であり、またタイトルからして、漂流記の一般論あるいは総論を期待したのであるが、そういう部分は第1章のみで、残りのすべては、津太夫の漂流記に費やされている。ま、ケーススタディとして取り上げたのかなという感じであるが、若干、牛頭狗肉の感はぬぐえない。

ただ、新書であるから、小説ではなくドキュメントタッチで、ある意味、学術的な突込みであるが、実際のところは、あっさりしていてむしろ良かったと思う。

漂流記の入門編としては、もう少しいろいろなパターンを詳しく扱ったほうがよかったのではないかという気もするが、読んでみると、この方がよかったかなと思うのと、もっといろいろな漂流記を読みたいという気にさせるという点で、成功していると思う。

　『戦艦武蔵』や『ポーツマスの旗』などで知られるノンフィクション小説家吉村昭氏の著作。吉村氏には『漂流』や『大黒屋光太夫』などの作品もあり、もともと漂流記には多大な関心があったらしい。本書は1793年に遭難し、ロシアに漂着した若宮丸の乗組員たちを主人公に据えている。

　シベリアの寒さとどのように戦かったか、皇帝との謁見、世界を半周する航海、長崎に帰着してからの苦難と、ほぼ乗組員たちの行程に沿って物語は進む。しかしロシアに残って日本語教師・通訳として良い暮らしをするか、それとも帰国するかをめぐって起こる仲間割れに重点が置かれ、緊迫感あふれる人間ドラマともなっている。

　ただ人間描写、政治状況の分析、漂流記の扱いなどは総じて甘く、物足りなさを覚える。
　改行がものすごく多く、平均して一段落が３行くらいなのも奥行きのなさを助長している。
