　年間の自殺者数が、３万人超で高止まりしていること
は、多くの方がご存知だと思います。しかし、それが平
成１０年に激増して以来であること、そしてその７割が
男性であり、年齢的には５０歳代後半以降の者が多い
ことなどまでは、そうは知られていないと思います。著
者は、そういう日本の自殺の実態を記すことから始め、
その予防が必要であり、またそれが可能であることを分
かりやすく解説してくれます。
　すなわち自殺は、さまざまな動機があるにせよ（最大の
ものは自身の健康問題）、それが直接引き起こすのもの
ではなく、うつ病等の精神疾患を併発して、はじめて危
険性が高まるのだといいます。その意味では著者達が取
り組む、救急救命センターでの自殺未遂者への精神科ス
タッフのケアで再企図率が低下したという本書の報告は、
さまざまな示唆に富んでいると思いました。
　これに関連して、杉山隆男『自衛隊が危ない』（2009小
学館101新書）は、自衛隊員で年齢別で自殺率が高いの
は３０代前半で、定年が早いためこの年代に中間管理職
としてのストレスが集中するからではないかと指摘して
います。色々と考えされられました。

筆者の方の経験や、過去の多くの研究に基づき、現在の日本の自殺の現状やその対応策、方法論の多くが詰まった一冊でした。これからの対応策を考える上でも貴重なエッセンスが多分に含まれていると思いました。

自殺者数がなおも上昇している現在の日本の現状においては、自殺の問題は僕ら日本で生活する国民一人一人の意識しなくてはならない問題であることを考えさせられました。
難解な専門用語なども出てこなかったので、とても読みやすく読了できました。

自殺予防に携わる精神保健の専門家のみならず、多くの方が一読すべき内容だと思いますので星５つ。

１．内容
以前から日本は自殺の多い国であるが、最近は３万人を超えるのが常態になってしまった。このような自殺は防げるし、防ぐべきである。そのためには自殺のことを知り、対策を立てるべきである。それでは自殺の原因は何か。健康問題もあろうし、生活問題もあろう。マスメディアが誘発する場合もあろう。ホットスポット対策も効果的だ。このように、自殺を知ることによって、対策が立てやすくなる。著者のような精神科医だけでなく、読者の皆様も、自殺企図者の心理を知り、適切な対応を心がけるべきである。ただ実際には、人的資源などが足りないので、それらの充実が必要だ。
２．評価
以前にも類書を読んだが（高橋祥友『自殺予防』（岩波新書））、それよりは、予防への取り組みの実際が多く書かれており、役に立つ内容になっている（どちらも役に立つ本ではあるが）。現在において自殺企図者がいない方でも、まさかのために読んでおいて損はない。自殺問題に興味をお持ちの方にお勧めできる内容だと思うので、星５つ。
