長山 靖生
1962年茨城県生まれ。評論家、歯学博士。鶴見大学歯学部卒業。歯科医の傍ら、文芸評論、社会時評など幅広く執筆活動を行っている。96年『偽史冒険世界』(ちくま文庫)で、第10回大衆文学研究賞受賞(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　相当な危機感を抱いて著された好著でありましょう。
　著者は歯科の開業医の傍ら、『ＳＦマガジン』等にも寄稿する多彩で広い視野を持った評論家です。また、地元茨城県に関わる著作『天下の副将軍―水戸藩から見た江戸三百年 (新潮選書)』が本書と同じ新潮選書から出ており、その中でも水戸人が関わった後の事件として、本書で取り上げた「血盟団事件」「五・一五事件」に、「反政府のナショナリズム」というコトバで水戸気質を表現しつつ触れています。
　現在、格差問題が騒がれるのと時を同じくして、素朴な「あの頃はよかった的」な過去をユートピア視するような論調があらわれています。著者はあとがきで、このような時代の空気と流れが、戦前の「戦争への道を選んだ」時期と軌を一にしていることを危惧し、本書を著したとのべています。
　本書では、主に水戸出身の農業指導者で思想家の橘孝三郎の思想とその実践が取り上げられれています。また、同時代の大衆が田園ユートピアに憧れる一方で、現実の閉塞的な時代状況を嘆いて破壊的な改革を求め、ひいては革命をすら肯定するに至った過程を解説しています。　橘孝三郎と彼をテロに引き込んだ井上日召のような民間人、軍人は大衆と感情を共有したからこそテロに走った。だからこそ、大衆は五・一五事件で首相を殺した軍人たちの減刑を嘆願した……。本書が取り上げた戦前史から学ぶべきことはあまりに多く、私も著者と危機感を共有しました。
　「軍靴の足音が聞こえる」的な通り一遍、陳腐な警告にはない迫力を感じさせる良書です。

　以下蛇足。
　「抜本改革」「庶民第一」「大企業中心の政治から国民本位の政治への転換」等々、言うは易。ただ、その後で。漸進改革を否定した後で何が来たか。我々はそこまで考えなければならないし、マスコミをはじめ、物申す人々はそこまで考えさなければならないのではないでしょうか？
