名作と言われている、「カラマーゾフの兄弟」ですが、ロシアの文化背景や、キリスト教に関する基礎知識が無いと、ストーリーは追えても、著者の意図した解釈はできません。
かくいう私も、何とかストーリーだけは追いかけて読み終わったわけですが、この状態では消化不良も甚だしく、こころに残る悶々とした気分は収まりませんでした。

その時に本書を知り読みましたが、私が字面だけを追っていた部分にこれだけの深遠な意図、仕掛け、理由があったのかと驚愕の連続でした。
カラマーゾフと言う名前に隠された秘密、3と言う数字の繰り返し、ユダとスメルジャコフとの関連性などなど、「本当に著者はここまでの事を狙って書いたのだろうか？」と感じると共に、そこまでの緻密な計算がなされた小説への畏敬の念が湧き上がって来ます。

本書を読むと、もう一度この名作を読み返し、内容を噛みしめたくなる事でしょう。でも本書の助け無しには、名作の名作たる部分を正しく理解する事は出来なかったと思います。

謎とき第二弾。
「カラマーゾフの兄弟」を読んで、興奮し、もっとこの作品の
魅力に浸りたいと思い、この「謎とき」にその期待を寄せた私
を、江川氏は裏切らなかった。

「カラマーゾフの兄弟」を読む、ドスト氏の作品を読む、そして
少しでもその面白さを体感した人に読んでいただきたい。
きっと、もっと好きになるでしょう。

前作「謎とき「罪と罰」」で読者に衝撃を与えた著者が、今回は「カラマーゾフの兄弟」の謎解きに挑んだもの。「カラマーゾフの兄弟」は個人的に世界最高峰の文学作品と考えているだけに興味津々で本書を手に取ったが、やはり衝撃の連続であった。

まず、「カラマーゾフ」という名前の分析から始まり、<好色><放蕩><聖痴愚>の意だとする。父フョードルとドミートリイだけなら納得するが、神の子アリョーシャを含む一族全員に当てはまると聞いて驚く。更に「カラ=黒」、「マーゾフ=塗る」として「黒く塗る」の意と解する。私は、Rolling Stonesの「Paint It Black」を想い出してしまった。アリョーシャは"黒いキリスト"だと言うのだ。ドストエフスキー自身、ロシア正教の信者だったにも関らず、アリョーシャの師ゾシマ長老がカトリックだった謎も解き明かす。

また、作品中で重要な役割を果たすスメルジャコフが去勢派の信徒で、アリョーシャとの対比で"白いキリスト"だった事を説明する。そして、スメルジャコフによるフョードル殺しが、まさに殉教行為だった事を示す。また、そのスメルジャコフを精神的に支配していたと思われたイワンとの関係が最後で逆転するが、これが当時のロシアの社会状況の反映という指摘も鋭い。黙示録との関係で作中で3と13という数字に拘る謎解きも爽快。結末でアリョーシャが12人の少年使徒を集め演説するシーンが、キリストと12人の使徒の投影で、書かれる筈だった次作の新教団組織の母体になるという指摘にも唸らされる。

著者の博識と執念に驚くと共に、改めて「カラマーゾフの兄弟」の偉大さを感じた。
