　ヘボン式ローマ字に名を残し、明治学院大学の創設者としても知られるヘボン。その生涯を綿密にたどった一冊。
　まず、ヘボンをアルファベットで綴るとHepburnだというのに驚いた。確かに発音すればヘボンに近くなるが、まさかオードリー・ヘップバーンと同じ名前だったとは。
　内容は非常にしっかりしている。1859年の来日から1892年の帰国まで、ヘボンが日本で暮らした33年間の出来事、仕事が詳細に紹介されている。中心となっているのは和英・英和辞書の編纂と日本語訳聖書の作成。特に人間関係が細部まで洗い出されており、日本人協力者、同僚宣教師、印刷業者などとの絡みをおさえつつ、ヘボンの仕事の意義が明らかにされている。幕末から明治初期という動乱の時代でもあり、国内・対外的な政治状況もしっかりと描かれている。
　と書くと、実に素晴らしい本のように思えるが、実際に読んでみると、もうひとつ面白くない。文章・構成が良くないので、読みにくく、内容が把握しにくい。ヘボンの理想化も甚だしい。歴史書としても読み物としても不満足。
