著者はロシア文学翻訳家として知られており、著者の訳でドストエフスキー他、ロシア文学に接した方も多いだろう。私の頃は米川正夫氏だった。その著者が「罪と罰」に仕掛けられた謎を究明するという探求本。その後、「謎とき「カラマーゾフの兄弟」」も上梓している。

正直、一つの作品をここまで深読みできるとは思わなかった。ドストエフスキーの脳の構造が常人離れしており、作品に刻まれた圧倒的な心理描写、行動原理については少しは理解しているつもりだったが、ここまでとはね。著者は作品のテキストを読み込む事によって謎を少しづつ解明して行く。ラスコーリニコフの名前がアンチ・キリストに由来しているくらいなら、まあ少しの研究で分かるかもしれないし、読者が無意識に想定している事と合致する。それよりも被害者の家の敷居を「またぐ」という一般的単語が、「一般社会の倫理の境界を踏み越えて罪の世界に入り込む」という意味の単語から派生している点の指摘などは鋭いと思う。こうした指摘が随所にあり、文学を読む際、原語を理解する重要性を感じさせる。だからと言って、これからロシア語をマスターするのは困難なのだが...。そして、これは単に原語を理解するだけではなく、文学的な理解力も必要とされる作業なのだが。また、「聖なる娼婦」ソーニャは早い段階でラスコーリニコフと(娼婦として)肉体的関係を持ったのだが、作品の構想が大きく、また崇高になるに連れ、精神面だけが強調されているという指摘も、なるほどと思った。

通俗小説として読んでも面白く、原罪を背負った人々の魂の救済を描いたキリスト教的背景を持った小説として読んでも面白い「罪と罰」。そのような多重構造を持った小説を平易に解説してくれる貴重な道案内の学究本。

ドストエフスキーの『罪と罰』を多角的な視点とロシア語の語源から捉えて小説の奥に隠されている様々なメッセージを読み取っていくというまさに“謎とき”の楽しさを教えてもらえる本。
改めて『罪と罰』が読みたくなった。
