ユン・チアンの「ワイルド・スワン」（講談社）で赤裸々にされた圧倒的な不条理、唾棄すべき理不尽さが本書でも顔を覗かせる。本書では、ひたすら悲惨な出来事が活写されるばかりではなく、そこはかとないユーモアも垣間見れるのは９歳から１４歳へと成長する多感な少女の一人称で描かれた小説だからなのかも知れない。当時（今も変わりないのだろうか？）この国には「階級」のほかに「階層」も存在し、ブルジョワ／プロテスタントでは括れない複雑な差別があった。ヒロインはエリート階級の娘で、彼女の親友は最下層の女の子である。ふたりが友情を育むところからその後の過程に沿ってドラマが大きく揺り動いていくのだが、忸怩たるものを禁じえない。一連の騒動を巻き起こした「偉大なる首領」批判の先にあるものも本文中に示されており興味深い。物語のラストは別の小説が間違って挟み込まれたような感がある。
