とても惹きつけられました。子を持つ親としてちょっと耐えられないショッキングな内容ですが、共感できる部分も多々ありました。力不足ながら、妻と子の間で板ばさみになる父フリッツの姿なんて我が身のように感じました。

語り手のエレンは被害者であり、残された遺族でもある。これ以上の悲劇はないでしょう。彼女が直面する惨劇の場面が頭から離れません。幼い彼女が母親の異変を感じとって凶兆におびえ、なのにどうにもできなくて無情に流されていくところなど心が痛みました。

女性それも母性が持つ心身的なバランスの微妙な変化、妊娠によるホルモンの変化、それらがもたらす精神の異常。いまでは中学生でも知っているこんなマタニティ・ブルーの知識が、およそ三十年前には解明されていなかったって事に驚きました。この作家の作品はもう翻訳されてないみたいですが、次がでたらまた読みたいですね。

テーマは自体は重く、内容もショッキングだが方々にちりばめられた微笑ましいシーンにホッとする。語り部のエレンをはじめ魅力的な登場人物達と　どんどん場面が展開していくスリリングで飽きさせない構成。稚拙な言い方だが読み始めるとこの世界に“はまる”といった表現がぴったり。
実際にオランダで起こった家族心中がベースになっているそうだが、ある事件を題材にここまで展開させ、物語として完成させているのは見事。作者の手腕が窺える。是非ともこの作者の他の作品も読んでみたい。
表紙も内容を的確に表現しているし、訳者の瑞々しい文章にも脱帽。
おすすめの1冊。

4ヶ月前に図書館で借りて読んだ。トラウマともいえる悲劇を経験した主人公がどう人生に向き合うかを書く。事件から数十年後、あまりの辛さにすべて失った記憶のなかから主人公は少しずつ思い出す。凄惨な記憶のかけらと共に思い出すのはかけがえのない家族との記憶。被害者というレッテルだけで説明するにはありあまる主人公の豊かな人生が、たくさんの細やかな日常の描写に支えられ優しく浮かび上がってくる。事件のセンセーショナルな側面が先行しがちなプロットの中で、より深く人間性を追求した本書は愛情あふれる読後感を与えてくれた。構成の複雑さを感じさせず、また、リアルな登場人物にも著者の力量を感じた。翻訳もリズムがあり見事。
