前２作が超絶に面白かったので、こちらも期待して購入した。７００ページ近くある大作であるが、あっという間に読んでしまった。
確かに宇宙論の解説本としては物足りないという意見もあるだろう。ビックバンの解説はほかにもいい本がある。だが、この本は、ビックバン理論が歴史上どうやって浮かび上がって、どうやって対立する理論を蹴散らし、最終的に確立されたかという筋を追ったもので、たいへん説得力がありドラマがある。
昔はトンデモ理論だったビックバン論が正しいと認知されるまでの過程を知るのと、
すでに認知されたビックバン論を解説したものを読むのでは、理解の深さでいうと前者の方に軍配が上がるだろう。
たとえば、現在の民主主義、たとえばアメリカの３権制度の仕組みを解説した本があったとしよう。それは確かに詳しく現状を分析しているが、面白くはないだろう。それより、古代からどうやって民主主義が成り立ってきて、なぜヨーロッパのピューリタンが新大陸にわたって国家をつくったのか、といった根本に流れる思想について解説した本の方が、はるかに示唆に富むからである。
本書もそのようなものである。

「宇宙論理研究者は研究室の外に出て、ビッグバン・モデルは人間の好奇心と知性に対する
賛辞なのだと、世界に向かって語りかけるべきである。」（本書より）
高校2年で物理の授業についていけなくなった。
しかし、そんな自分でも本書は面白く読めた。
そして、上記の言葉に心から賛成した。
人間の理性が到達し得る、究極の謎解き。その世界をかいま見せてくれたサイモン・シンと、
訳者の青木薫氏に感謝。

やはり物足りない内容だった。恒星の核反応や銀河形成に付いては、佐藤・松田『新装版 相対論的宇宙論』（ブルーバックス）が、ビッグバンに付いてはワインバーグ『宇宙創成はじめの三分間』が良い。ホイルが公平に解説した『宇宙物理学の最前線』（値段が高い）や、背景放射の観測ならスムート自身による『宇宙のしわ』が、インフレーションならグース自身の『なぜビッグバンは起こったのか』がある。そちらの方が迫力がある。
出典のがわかるような文献表が無いのは不思議。ノンフィクションや個人の会話などがたくさん載っている本で、出典が明記されていないの不合格。訳書で省かれているのならば、言語道断。また、原著刊行から２年経っているのが惜しい。自然科学の翻訳は、少数の翻訳者に仕事が集中しているようだ。出版社や編集者自身が内容を理解せずに、安易に企画しているのだろう。
