とにかく面白いの一言！高校時代、数学ができず進級すら危ぶまれた私が一晩で読み上げてしまいました。数学者の情熱に刺激され、なぜか高校時代の教科書（･･･と言っても解答つきの虎の巻の方だけど）を引っ張りだし、解き始めて周囲を驚かすことに(笑）それでも興奮が冷めやまず、高校時の数学の先生（担任でもあった）にこの本を薦めたところ、すでに担任クラスの生徒に読ませており、なんと読後はテストの平均点が著しくアップしたとのこと！素晴らしい！！「あなたが五年前に読むことができれば、私もあんなに苦労しなかったのに･･･」と恩師にため息をつかれたのはせつなっかたけど。

すごい。絶対のおすすめ。同著者の「暗号解読」を最近読んだが、それと並ぶ名著。フェルマーの最終定理の証明については以前も読んだことがあるが、難解で楽しめなかった。この本はそんな純粋数学の歴史をドラマチックにしかも正確に啓蒙的に描くというほとんど不可能とも思えることを成し遂げている。面倒な証明などは巻末の補遺に回してあるのだが、普通この手の本であれば敬遠するような補遺の部分も読みふけった。中学校卒程度の数学力で理解できるよう巧妙にかみ砕いた説明。
　純粋数学から離れて、川の全長が直線距離の円周率倍に近づくこと（43ページ）、セミの幼虫が地下で過ごす年数が素数になる理由（137ページ）など、幅広い分野でのエピソードも満載。

　なぜこのようにおもしろく読めるのか

Andrew Wilesが1994年に証明したフェルマーの最終定理を題材に、ピュタゴラス、エウクレイデス（ユークリッド）、ディオファントスなどのギリシャ数学者に始まり、フェルマー、オイラー、ガウス、ガロア、ヒルベルト、ゲーデル、等の巨星が次々に登場し、読者に息つく暇を与えない。様々な逸話が登場するが、それが主題と直接・間接に関連し、著者の博識と筆力に脱帽せざるを得ない。

Wilesの８年間に渡る努力の描写は素晴らしい。特に1993年母校ケンブリッジで証明を公表した後、それに欠陥があると判明してから1994年遂に修正を終えるまでの一年間は、シナリオとしても出来すぎである。

Aczelの本でもそうだったが、谷山・志村両氏の貢献を正当に評価している。ちなみに本書では、Aczelほどヴェイユを悪く捉えてはいない。

!フェルマーの最終定理を扱った書物は数多く存在するが、こと一般向けに書かれたものでは、本書を凌駕するものは全く考えられない出来栄えである。
