1967年から1972年まで6年間にわたって行われたアポロ計画。そのミッションの間、宇宙飛行士は高級写真機ハッセルブラッドで数多くの写真を撮影していた。そのうち約20点は報道写真として公開されたが、複写につぐ複写であったため、クオリティは無惨なほど劣化していた。また、NASAが門外不出とした膨大な未公開のオリジナル写真は、四半世紀の間、NASAの低温保管庫で誰の目にも触れることなく長い眠りについていた。本書は、4年の歳月をかけ、3万2000点から厳選された129点のオリジナル写真によって、ロケット打ち上げ、着陸、月面活動、離陸、地球への帰還―と人類初の月面旅行を時系列に再構成した空前絶後の写真集である。

アポロ宇宙船のメンバーが、ハッセルブラッドで撮影したモノクロとカラーの画像。月のモノクロの世界に人間が持ち込んだ「僅かな色彩」。漆黒の宇宙に浮かぶ「色彩に溢れた奇跡の星　地球」へとページが進むと、胸が熱くなりました。地球人の貴方、宇宙飛行士にはなれない貴方、是非、地球の豊かさ、素晴らしさを再確認してください。

･･･宇宙空間の写真は、地球上で撮影したものとは写り方が違う。空気中の乱反射が無い事や光を遮るものがほとんど無い事（解らないが他にも要因があると思う）、そして強烈な光と真の闇。

当然ながら、画像からは音や温度は伝わって来ない。宇宙服のブーツが分厚くてはっきりと感じないであろう月の砂の感触は、どんな感触なのだろうか。
強烈な光と影が生み出す寒暖の実感はあるのだろうか･･･それらを考えながら何かしら画像の質感を読み取ろうとしても、何一つイメージ出来ない。
有名なオルドリンの足跡は200万年は消えないという。
宇宙のスケールが想像できないのは勿論の事、我々の地球上での物差しはほとんど通用しないのであり、このどこまでもイメージ出来ない世界によくも人類は足跡を残したものだと改めて想う。そして色々な意味で、そら恐ろしくも想う。
いずれにしても我々は想いを馳せるのみであり･･･ここにある画像は、ただただ静寂で不思議な美しさをたたえている。私が購入したのは普及版だが、オリジナル版の大きさで見たい、しかしそれでも満足できないであろう写真集。

　モノクロと思った月面写真上の色・・、生命のない世界に人間の存在を示すコラージュのようにも思える写真も収録されて1999年に発行された大型本（30x29.5x2.5cm）の新装版が本書です。寸法比は液晶テレビの37型と26型に相当しますので悩ましいですが、A4判の短手方向の寸法とほぼ同じため、所蔵スペースに制限のある方には勧められます。
　本書（1999年版）の登場前、月の写真集は小尾信彌訳著「月写真集」（1978、朝倉書店）のみでした。この本のグラビア印刷による写真のクオリティは中判カメラで撮影していることを知っていましたので、欲求不満を感じるものでした。そして本書を手にし、「これが見たかったんだ」と心の中で叫んでしまいました。
　本書は写真の部（サターンロケットの打ち上げから地球への帰還まで、写真を順番に並べることで描いたもの。キャプションなし）、「アポロ計画ミッションデータ」、Andrew Chaikin（"A Man on the Moon"(1994)の著者）による「最果ての地」と題したアポロミッションと宇宙飛行士に関する解説、Michael Lightによる「月の素顔」と題した本写真集の制作に関する解説、そして「本書の写真について」として写真の部で示した各写真の解説文で構成されます。アポロ計画について馴染みのない方は、逸る気持ちを抑えて写真の部を見るのは後回しにし、「月の素顔」、「写真本書の写真について」を読んでから、写真の部に戻って見ることを勧めます。ひとつひとつの写真の意味が伝わってくると思います。
　なお、レビュー者はアポロ計画について予備知識があるため、写真の部からページを開き始めましたが、ジェミニ計画での宇宙遊泳の写真には戸惑いを覚えました。（この写真が使われた理由は「本書の写真について」で書かれていますが・・。）
