5.0 out of 5 stars ☆　すばらしい作品　アメリカ小説の金字塔？言い過ぎかな？, 2004/11/1
かなりの「話題作」だったのだが、ようやく読むことが出来た。古本でしか入手できないのは悲しいですね。本書は１０編ほどの短編からなるが、いずれも面白い。著者を忠実に写したと見られる、全ての短編に見られる「病んだ主人公」。脳に損傷を負うか、または現実になじめない主人公たち。「生を傷の痛みとして生きる」つらさや、切なさ。特にベトナム戦争の描写では、著者の実体験としか思えないほどリアルです。「本当の戦争の話をしよう」(By　オブライエン)と重なる描写力には素直に脱帽。アメリカの小説というと、「ストーリングテリング」が重視される　とうい常識(私だけの把握？)を破るほど　主人公の内面に光を当てた手腕はただ者ではない。彼の作品で邦訳されているのはこの本だけなのが惜しまれる。「ボクシング」「てんかん」「戦争」…　いずれも主題となり、リフレインのように主人公の心の痛みが伝わってくる。私にとっては、ヘミングウェイ以来の作家と思えるが、言い過ぎかな？

トム・ジョーンズ著「拳闘士の休息」は、村上春樹さんも紹介したことのある短編集です。
主人公は何らかの障害（癲癇が多い）を持っていることが多く、それだけ聞くと暗い印象を受けるかと思います。

しかしトム・ジョーンズの語り口、そして訳者の岸本佐知子さんの翻訳はテンポ良く、リズムに満ち、シニカルな口調が憂鬱さを笑い飛ばすどころかそのベクトルを変化させ、軽快さに近いところまで持っていくのでした。
頭の上を黒い影が通り過ぎて、目をつぶって息を止めたくなったその瞬間、見える光があるだろう。

おがくずが頭が詰まっているよう感じた時の、お勧めの一冊。

ベトナム戦争が文学や映画に与えた影響は凄まじく大きいと私は思うし、その事でその後の一生が変わってしまった方の文学には特に興味がある。
ただ、その教訓は生かせてないとも思うけど。
もちろんその筆頭はティム・オブライエンですが、オブライエンには無い、ザラリとした、理不尽なモノをそのまま受け入れ立ち向かうトム・ジョーンズは、また気になる作家である。

ぜひ彼の新たな作品の翻訳を望みます！

噂で、舞城さんが翻訳するとか、しないとか。事実なら、彼ならきっと素晴らしい訳になると思うのだが...
