この本ではヘイグをディープスロートとしていたが、それは見事に外れ
てしまった。また、ウッドワードも「ディープスロート」ではこの本の
ことを直接には言及していない（言外に的外れだという書き方をしてい
るが）。アメリカでもこの本はほら話だという意見もあるが・・・
この本が語っていることが真実かどうかは私には決めることができな
い。しかし、日本ででているウォーターゲート本の中では、一番考えさ
せられ、かつ面白い本と言える。

最初盗聴事件に関する叙述から始まるが、これはウォーターゲートの盗
聴ではなく、軍部がホワイトハウスに対しておこなった盗聴事件の話か
ら始まる。最初はなんのこっちゃい、という感じなのだが、読みすすめ
ていくうちに話の構図がわかっていく。

ニクソンと軍部、さらにはFBI/CIAとの対立を基軸に、ウォーターゲー
ト事件といわれているものにおけるディーンの役割、そしてウォーター
ゲート事件によって引き起こされたニクソン辞任劇におけるヘイグ（つ
まり軍部）の役割の二点を詳細に書いている。とりわけ後者について、
ニクソン政権下でヘイグが権力を握り、いかにしてニクソンを放逐して
いくかのプロセスを著者は「Silent Coup」だといっているわけだ。
