ストーリーは面白いし、人物や状歴史背景の描写も精緻を極めている。確かに名著ではあると思う。しかし自分はあえて星５つでははく、４つと評価します。以下がその理由です。

本書における奴隷を中心とする黒人の描写には、同じ「有色人種」である自分から見て、あまりに酷いものがあります。奴隷たちが自らの地位にそれなりに満足であったことを示唆する記述や、黒人特有の話し方を極度に強調した会話体（現代の英語母語者が原作を読むと、何を言っているのかわからないという）等々・・・。

確かに、ミッチェル氏が本書を書いた1930年代は、公民権運動は遥か先の時代で、時代の風潮として黒人差別が一般的であっただろう。しかし、私たちは、まさにこの物語の繰り広げられた時代、この本の中では蔑まされている「北部」で、ロバート・ショーという大佐が、初の黒人連隊を率いてサウスカロライナ州フォートワグナーに突撃し、戦死しているという事実も知るべきであろう。同氏と同連隊をたたえる記念碑は今もボストン市にある。ショーは黒人奴隷廃止論者であった。1860年代当時にも、命をかけて人種差別と闘った白人はいたのである。ミッチェル氏ももう少し考えるところがなかったのか・・・？　大変疑問である。

また、奴隷廃止論者は古くから黒人・白人を問わずおり、つい先だっても、NY市ジュリアーニ市長は、同市の奴隷廃止論者の伝統的居住地域の中の道をロバート・ショーにちなんで改名することを発表している。

「風と共に去りぬ」を読むとき、私たちは一方で、以上のような事実も忘れてはならないと思う。序章を設け、このような事実を読者に伝えるのも一つの方法ではないかと思う。
