年上の女性、ニューハンプシャー、レスリング・・・なんとなく、ジョン・アービングの「全部入り」みたいな感じです。上下巻たっぷりあって、その合間にはさまれる小説や映画のシナプスもまた、それだけで読みたくなるような面白さ。
ジョン・アービングの小説って、出てくる人出てくる人が、軌道を逸した変な人で、主人公が一番まともに見えてくるんですよね。今回も魅力的な脇役がわんさかわんさか出てきます。

一皿一皿に驚きがあるフランス料理のコースのようでした。
ごちそうさまです。

身体中に刺青を刻み付けた父親を母とふたり追い駆けてさまざまな町を漂流し、
さらには自身が多くの女性に翻弄されてしまうという下ネタ話に辟易とした上巻。
その波を潜り抜けて真実が明かされて行く下巻。
全編を通して映画を観ているようだ。しかも教会オルガンが流れている。

久し振りにアダルトチルドレンということばを思い出した。
幼少期に傷ついた自分を可哀想に思うあまり、
大人になっても自分を甘やかして律することのできない
だらしのない人間にしか見えないジャック。
それなのに惹き付けられて先を急ぐように読んでしまったのは
彼が人生をどう立て直したのかを知りたかったからに他ならない。

アーヴィングの自伝的小説ということも相まって興味はさらに尽きず、
書くという作業によってかれもまた精神の浄化を得られたのだと理解できる。
小説とは作家が自分を切り売りするようなものだと言ったのはだれだったか。
かれはここに全てを書くことができたのだ。もはや切り売りではなく。

「オウエンのために祈りを」を原書で読んで感激して以来、アーヴィングの本はほぼ全て原書で読んできた。本書も、原書発売と同時に買って読み始めたが、絶世の美少年である主人公ジャック・バーンズにあまりに都合良くストーリーが展開されるので（特に女性関係）、途中で読むのをやめてしまった。ところが、翻訳を読みだすと、途中でやめられなくなり、急ぎでない仕事をほったらかして、最後まで読んでしまった。「オウエン」のように、ラストで号泣することはなかったが、時々落涙した。何に落涙したか書くと、ネタばらしになるので書かない。今になってみると、原書で最後まで読み通さなかったことが悔やまれる。それにしても、「また会う日まで」なんて、歌謡曲みたいな題名はちょっとどうかと思う。
