『快楽の活用』は『自己への配慮』と並ぶ，晩年のフーコーの代表的著作である．よく知られているように，『知への意志』と『快楽の活用』の間には約8年のギャップがある．このギャップは一般に，フーコーの活動停止期間という風に捉えられがちだが，正しくはフーコーがそれ以前の，いわゆる権力を中心とした方法論による主体のあり方を記述するスタイルの限界を通して，「主体化の問題」という彼の哲学の基盤にある問題を描き出す為の新しい記述のスタイルを模索していた期間と捉えられるべきであろう．この8年の間にフーコーが直面した様々なジレンマについてはドゥルーズ『フーコー』でも触れられている．8年のギャップを経て出版された『快楽の活用』，『自己への配慮』では，それまでフーコーが主に扱ってきた「古典主義時代（18世紀）」から遠く離れたギリシャ社会における人々のダイアローグが記述され，人々が自己の性のあり方を形式化する為に用いた実践の様式について淡々と綴られる．その禁欲的とも凡庸ともいわれる記述のスタイル，ギリシャへの言及は，それまでのフーコーの著作になれ親しんでいた読者を困惑させるものであった．しかし，この「主体化の形式」を巡るフーコーの記述スタイルの変更は，後期フーコーを理解する重要なキーであるばかりではなく，権力論の内部における主体のあり方／可能性についての記述が孕む限界が明らかになった今日（そうした問題は特に人権を主題とする一連の学問において顕著である），主体を論じる新たな方法論の提示，という点において重要であるといえよう．また，あとがきには，フーコーの晩年の活動を説明することで，フーコーの記述スタイルを変更の理由についての考察も含まれており，後期フーコーについての研究，解説書が限られている日本において後期フーコーを知る手がかりとしても有効である．

要するにこういうことだ。古代ギリシアの性道徳は、対女性における男性、対少年における成人男性が快楽への志向を主体的に制御し、自らを律することに最高の意義を見出した。要するに「自分に勝つ」（self-mastery, triumph over oneself)ということが最も重要視されたのであって、それが家庭、共同体、国家経営の基礎を成すものであった。ギリシア市民は、自らの振るまいを律することの出来る程度に応じて、相応の社会的地位を得ることが出来たというわけだ。要するに、古代ギリシアでは、性規範が成文の形で存在したわけではなく、成年男性が自らを「主体」として律することが尊ばれた。この場合、女性、奴隷、使用人や性愛の対象としての少年は主体的に行動する存在として認識されていない。

　同書の和訳を読んだわけではないが、書店でぱらぱらとめくってみた限りでは実に判りにくそうな日本語のような気がしたので、英訳版で読んでみた（私はフランス語が読めないので）。話の具体性が増したせいか、この英訳はなかなか簡潔で意味のとれないところがほとんどない。その意味ではVOL. 1よりも判りやすい。おすすめである。

　フーコーは序文で主体の形成をあつかうとはっきりのべている。この書はギリシャについてであり、次のローマ、そして未完に終わった4巻では中世キリスト教を扱って1巻の近代へと戻ってくる筈だった。
