一望監視装置パノプティコン…「最大多数の最大幸福」で有名なかの功利主義思想家ベンサムが考案したこの装置こそは、まさに魂の刑罰装置であり、それは近代において登場した病院、刑務所、工場、そして学校そのものの姿である。
「見られているかどうかわからない」ことによる魂の服従…この近代のゆがんだ装置について書かれた書物を、私はあえて教育に携わる先生方、これから携わろうとしている学生さんたちに読んでほしい、といいたい。＜自由＞であることの難しさ、ルソー以来教育が抱き続けてきた＜近代＞問題を考える上で絶対に読んでおくべきである、いや、ひょとすると読まずに教壇に立つのは犯罪と呼ぶに値するのかもしれない…。

非常に難解なフーコーの著作にしては珍しく、本書は論点が明確です。とはいえ、『監獄の誕生』というタイトルから抱かれる本書への期待を見事に裏切り、その内容は、規律＝訓練社会の誕生とともに形成された現代人特有の人間理解に焦点が当てられています。

本書を手にとれば、「人間とは何か？」、そして「現代特有の身体に対するフェティシズムとは何か？」という根源的な問いに、一定の答えを得られるはずです。くわえて、現代人がいかにせまい視野で自分自身を理解しているのか、という点も、良く理解できるはずです。

単なる入門書的な心理学ものでは体感できない重厚な人間理解・解釈を堪能できる作品として、是非ともお勧めいたします。

近代とそれ以前を分かつドラスティックな変動を知るには、まず読まなければならない必読書。ただ、cabaret voltaire さんが指摘されているように、そろそろ改訳版を出してほしい。筑摩の思考集成の翻訳などと比べて、訳が硬く十分意味を拾い切れてないところも散見されるからだ。もちろん、フーコーの思想そのものが一般的でない時期に、これだけの翻訳を手がけた田村氏のパイオニア精神と労力には賛辞を惜しまない。
