訪れる村落で出会う多くの人々の言動、美しい動物、おぞましい貧困、そして現実を現実でなくする（現実でないことを現実にする？）呪術やアニミズム。読み方が悪いのかもしれないが、これらがぐちゃぐちゃと一体となって、たまに途中でなんの話だかわからなくなることがあった。

しかし、それでもこの本は読み進めることができる。些細なことは関係ないのだ。博物学的探検記を期待すると外れるが、書き手たちが混沌のなかを進んでいくさまが、まさしくそんな読書体験となる不思議な本だと思った。

値段からして、そんなに部数をつくっているわけではなさそうだが、こういう本こそもっと取りざたされて良さそうだ。

この人普通じゃないと思った。財産をはたいて幻の怪獣をたしかめるための旅に出るなんて。
文章も普通じゃないと思った。たいていの旅行記なんて、醜い部分を割愛しちゃうものだけどこの人は書かなきゃいいのにと思うくらいオープンにあったままを書いている感じだった。
アフリカどころか海外にも行ったことないけれど、この本にアフリカの熱気とリアルを感じた。くせのある文ではあるけれど、間違いなくおもしろい本だと思う。

困難な旅の中にありながら、本書の主人公、マルセラン・アニャーニャ博士の語る言葉を日々書き留めていった著者、レドモンド・オハンロンの驚くべき精神力に敬意を表さずにはいられない。なんというすばらしい本だろう！
