本書はスティーヴン・キングの「デスペレーション」（新潮社）と異母兄弟のような関係である（「デス･･･お兄さん」から読まれることを強くすすめる）。物語の舞台は異なるものの、「デス･･･」で登場した人物たちが主役級、ちょい役も含めて全員集合しているのがとてもユニークだ。一部の人物を除いて名前は同じだけれど設定はまるっきり違うので、最初のうちは混乱を来たすかも知れない。そのギャップがまた痛快なのだけれど。のどかな住宅街がＳＦの世界と西部劇の世界をごちゃまぜミックスしたカオスに呑みこまれてしまう。少年の豊かな想像力そのままに「なんでもあり」の世界で近所の住人たちは一致団結して「解決」を目指すが、そう簡単に物事は進まない。錯綜に次ぐ錯綜の連続に大団円がこの作品には存在するのか･･･と不安になってくる佳作小説だ。ところでリチャード・バックマンって誰なんでしょうね？･･･と言ってみる。

出来ればキング著の「デスペレーション」を読んでからの方が、色々対比できて面白いです。
内容的には、さすがバックマン。素敵に町を破壊してくれています。
が、親兄弟、親戚、隣人、恋人達の愛情も細やかに描かれており、最後には必ずやあなたの胸を熱くしてくれる事でしょう。

お子さんをお持ちの方は是非一読を。読後にお子さんを抱きしめたくなる事受け合いです。
又「ローズ・マダー」等でお馴染みのキャラも出てきます。
彼女の恋愛も絡んでいて又これも楽しい。

作者バックマンは匿名ガン（？）で亡くなってしまいましたが、どうかこの後も未刊行の原稿が発見される事を祈る毎日です。
