夫の暴力から逃げ出し自立を求める女性。彼女の不安や恐怖が行間から伝わる。逃げ出せないと信じるものから逃げ出す彼女の気持ちのゆらぎには、迫るものを感じる。Ｓ・キングならではの、引き込む要素と、ほのかに現世ではないものが無理なく混ざってくる手腕には感服する。彼女を囲む登場人物にも、実在感があり、一気に物語りに引きずり込まれるところは、さすがキングである。

主人公のローズがDV夫のノーマンから逃げるという筋書きだが、どんどんシーンが変わるので息もつかせず楽しめる。夫ノーマンが海兵隊出身という設定のためかかなり暴力的、卑猥な表現あり。心身ともにだんだん怪物になっていくノーマンと逃げるローズの精神的自立の過程が書かれる。ラストのエピローグにはにやりとした。さすがキング。

　ＤＶ（家庭内暴力）や警官による暴行というのが、アメリカの日常でどれぐらい現実的な驚異なのかということを、正直言ってよく知らない。ただ、ＴＶなどでかいま見ると、かなりひどい場合があるのは理解している。本書ではこの理解をより深めてくれるのだが、これがミリオンセラーになるとはアメリカはつくづく病んだ国である。

　血と暴力で彩られた導入部分はかなり気が重い。途中からモダンホラーというよりもファンタジー味を醸し出してくる。このあたりは個人的には違和感があったのだが、スピーディーな展開と主人公と夫とを対比して描写する記述が効果的で、早くページをめくりたくてたまらなくなる。その点ではベストセラーになった理由が分かる。

　主人公が暴力夫から三文ロマンス小説を読んでいるのを咎められるシーンがあるが、物語終章を読む限り本書はキング流解釈のロマンス本だったと思える。
