「フランス外人部隊に入りたい」と息子が言ったとき、自分はどのように感じ、どのように行動するだろうか？この本が、私にまっすぐ突きつけてきた問いである。
地方の一消防士、森本喬は、アメリカを旅行しているはずの息子の雄一郎から「お父さん、フランス外人部隊に入隊します」と書かれた手紙を受け取る。そこから、海を隔てた１９通に及ぶ親子の手紙のやり取りが始まる。それは、平時では起こりえない父と子が真摯に向き合う姿でもある。
著者は、外人部隊に入った息子を批判もせず、英雄視もしていない。また、公務員として働くことにより家庭を守ろうとしている父親を否定するでもなく、肯定するでもない。むしろ、親子のやり取りを淡々と記述していくことにより、「息子がフランス外人部隊に入る」という事実が一般的な家庭に現実に起こったことであり、どの家庭にも起こりうることだと示そうとしているようだ。
フランス外人部隊ほど極端ではなくても、危険で突飛な（と親が考える）ことを息子がやりたがることはよくあることであろう。それは「冬山に登る」かもしれないし、「サラリーマンをやめて会社を起こす」かもしれない。
父親にとっては息子の気持ちを、息子にとっては父親の気持ちを考えるきっかけを与えてくれる良書である。

　四国の国立大生が突然失踪し、フランス外人部隊へ入隊、それをきっかけに父子が交わした書簡がベースとなったノンフィクション。元地方紙記者の筆者は過不足なく、淡々と２人の人生観の衝突、理解を描いており、とても読みやすい。

　何もかも打ち捨てて、新たな刺激にあふれた未知なる場所へ行く。魅力的だ。だが。

　一番印象に残った場面。外人部隊３年目にして、５年間の任期を満了したら除隊すると決める。「あれだけ苦しい思いをして乗りきってきた外人部隊での生活も、すでに彼にとっては変化に乏しい、たいくつなものに映り始めていた」からだ。

　結局、人間なんだって慣れるんだ。慣れるか、ドロップアウトするかのどちらか。永遠に刺激を求め続けることなんて難しい。冒険家にしたって、いずれ冒険に飽きるだろう。飽きないようにするには？

　パラダイムの転換が求められている。「退屈な日常」は本当は退屈でないかもしれない。自分で退屈にしているのかもしれない。多分そうだろう。パターン化した行動を打破せねば。
