読みやすかったけど、あまり面白くはありませんでした。
ドキュメンタリーをTVで見て、著者の現在の状態などを知ったあとで
読んだので、いろいろ重なる部分はありましたが、
もしも何も知らずに読んだとしたら、正直最後まで読んだかは疑問です。

新聞でこの人についての記事を読んだ。私の家族にも肝臓癌で他界した者がいて、その時のことが少し思い出されたが、この人とは年齢が違う。30代半ばで肝臓癌を宣告されたこの人の無念さとは、比較したらいけないかもしれない。宣告を機に鬱になりパニック障害になったことに同情する。彼が抱いた外界に対する呪いに近い恐怖にも。ただし…

本書は小説だが、彼自身を描くドキュメントに比べると、正直、つまらないと思う。雑誌に、この人の所属事務所（サッカーの中田英寿選手らの所属する有名事務所なのだそうだ。その関係で本が出て、中田選手の推薦文も載っているというわけか）の社長が文章を寄せていて、その中で、「初めて小説を書いたとは思えないほどの出来」という出版社の人のコメントが引かれていたが、ふだん小説を読むことを仕事にしている文芸編集者の言葉だとしたらそれは本心ではあるまい。現実（全く理不尽な「現実」だ）を受け容れた者にしか描けないような世界だと舌を巻いたとのことだが、そんな「世界」がこの小説のどこに表現されているというのか？　文章も、子供の作文の水準から少し出た程でしかない、というのが本当のところのはずだ。

繰り返し言うがこの人の境遇には同情する。人格を否定するつもりも無い。ただ作品の格は肯定し難い。小説として作品のどこを評価すればいいのか。所属事務所や中田選手の心意気に応じて出版のため尽力したのであろうその経緯は推察できるし、そのこと自体は好意的にとらえたい。しかし闘病記・手記という形ではなく小説作品という形式が選択されたのなら、編集者は小説としての構成や文章をもう少しなんとかしてあげることはできなかったのか。

大事なのは、｢どれだけの病気か」ではなく「どういう作品か」なんだ。
前半部と後半部の乖離が大き過ぎる。
